Look, LLM use in academia isn't just students. You need to be speaking clearly with your collaborators about your writing standards from the beginning. Make people say out loud that they don't write their own articles anymore.

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

Impossible how good reading is. You mean I just point my face at the paper for a bit and it does a whole update on my brain?

Let's make a deal. If you read it (I did, I'm so sorry) you must send $10 to the independent journalist of your choice.
i promise i don’t mean to high horse this but if you’re thinking about giving lizza ten bucks there are a lot of good independent journalists whose work you could subscribe to for a month instead

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

For those covering #autism news today, I offer this guide to avoiding ableist and stigmatizing language, complete with suggested alternatives.
🎉 Lab paper alert: “Autism ableism seen through research abstract contents: A mixed-methods analysis of language in NIH-funded genetic and genomic autism research.” We found ableist/stigmatizing language ubiquitous throughout grant abstracts from 1980-2022.

Important thread in the disastrous proposed Vancouver budget
Missed my number being called tonight (#609) to speak via phone to Vancouver City Council during their multi-night meeting on the city’s very controversial 0% austerity budget. Remarkable to have that many speakers, and to have almost all opposing the proposed cuts, instead asking for a % increase.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

You know when someone writes something that is just perfect reflection of your own thoughts?

“Incoherent empty men want to sell me the chance to stop reading and writing and thinking, to stop caring for my kids or talking to my parents, to stop choosing what I do or knowing why I do it.”
I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.
I Am An AI Hater
I am an AI hater. This is considered rude, but I do not care, because I am a hater.
