mary karr suggests that to truly invest in a story, real or imagined, you need to be able to zip yourself up in the skin of its players; feel all that they feel, through their bodies. when people get weirdly puritanical about 1stp books, i can only imagine them incapable of closing the zip.
"I DNF first-person books if I can't relate to the protagonist" is a kind of illiteracy.
The point of first person is not to insert yourself into a narrative. You are supposed to experience and empathize with the perspective of a character that is intended to be fully fleshed out.
