I think my problem with that kind of, for lack of a precise term, [heckin wholesome smol bean positivity New Sincerity whimsey]-thing is that I find it fundamentally condescending. Like my preference of affectations or aesthetics makes me a bad person. Like melancholy is just a Bad Dumb Decision.

"breaking kayfabe" is a great way of putting it - when I read the Flood 33⅓ book the authors were openly in a bind when they got to dissecting this one bc it just isn't interested in being slippery or misleading! Yet it somehow fits within the TMBG ethos - I can't imagine another band writing it
still isn’t my favorite, but you can trace the trajectory of the last few decades from how my opinion changed from “uncharacteristically didactic, sticks out like a sore thumb” to “the nerds thought it important enough in 1990 to break kayfabe and say party drunk racists are the biggest red flag”
