Been off Spotify Premium less than a week; left the house for 2 hours with ad riddled music and my battery is half depleted. Jeezuz.

Did you like my graphic novel THE GHOSTKEEPER?

Tis the season to leave a review! Reviews help authors a ton and you get to share things you like about a book, it’s a win-win! 👻

I have a related question! Now that so many of our "followers" are bots or whatever, are follower counts even aspirational anymore?
Random talk here:

I've been asked before by newer/younger artists about how to get popular or meet other artists.

My answer is "please do not make popularity your focus when creating art." It's going to leave you frustrated and feeling empty when you create artwork. It'll suck the fun out of it.

Seconding this, I left Twitter with 3k followers that took me ten years to gather. I've hit that number in two years here on bsky and all of the engagement I've had has been real and earnest- also more AD's and designers have contacted me for work here than in all my time on Twitter. Make the move.
something that always strikes me with "omg I CAN'T leave twitter, my numbers!" is that those numbers DON'T matter. they aren't actually a mark of quality.

I had 15k more followers on twitter, and usually 3x more likes per post or whatever, but when it comes to getting work? INFINITELY better, here.

My rule of thumb for comic bgs is to make at least the establishing shot’s bg detailed & clear; the rest of the bgs on that page can be drawn in shorthand, if you’re low on time/resources

YMMV but comickers aren’t paid enough to draw all high-detail bgs, & the bg will prob be covered by text anyway
I’m not trying to be rude but I’m not happy about “you’re just one artist—don’t draw backgrounds!” Cmon homie

Don’t skimp on the background. That’s part of the comic! Don’t skimp on anything! Just draw slower! That’s where you give yourself the grace. Don’t half ass your comic

Everyone wanting to write AND draw their own graphic novel needs to look at this, and plan your finances/side-gigs accordingly.

The advance money reeeeally doesn't go as far as you think it does.
Here’s some math courtesy of Nate Powell to keep in mind when signing that graphic novel deal. #comics

I know literally nobody asked but I have a recurring character in my head ‘WiZ dAWGg’’ in my head. He’s like a weird amalgamation of Doraemon and my dad’s stuffed dog toy.

Facebook showed me some 11 year old art I made which made me throw up in mouth a little which is ironic considering its the piece that turned my whole art style over into what is now and stopped me from quitting art school.

To the few younger MIAD students who follow me; I know you didn't ask but be wary of offers like this. A bunch of us in my year got taken advantage of being fresh out of school and were low-balled on time consuming projects. If the math doesn't sound right, that's food and debts not being met.
I am SO TIRED of getting emails from giant companies asking me to do two weeks worth of work for them for like $800. Has this shit gotten worse over the years? Why are these massive corps asking me to work for less than minimum wage? I swear it didn't use to be this bad.

My job at the grocery store was AWFUL; but damn if picking some of this off the shelf along with a pouch of sweet & spicy tuna then running it back to the breakroom during that 10 hour blizzard shift didn't fix me in a weird way...
i know making rice is debatably the easiest thing in the world to make, but there is just SOMETHING about the texture of microwave sticky rice........ the mouthfeel is so specific and yumlicious.

When the Epstein 50th birthday book came out, nothing happened. People drew sexualized pictures of little girls in it and not a single person faced repercussions.
My greatest fear is that these files will release and the same thing happens: shocked disgust and then fucking nothing else #political
One horrific thing to me is that the president- a man who has gotten away with everything including literal murder up to this point- seems extremely nervous about anything regarding Epstein coming out. Like how bad does it have to be

This is why I encourage new grads entering any art industry that there’s no shame in finding a non-art dayjob w health insurance (if they’re able). It’s not giving up or failing as a creator; it’s survival, in an uncaring system that exists beyond our control and makes freelancing unsustainable
So every freelancer you know is going to lose their insurance or be bankrupted by premiums because Schumer is an invertebrate

Computer desktop is a MESS; but I did find some gems.

I don't talk about my dad a lot because we had a bad relationship. He prided himself in architecture but rarely and just for fun he would draw cartoons in a Gary Brookins reminiscent style. He left a big impact for sure.
