I just finished the Defunctland Living Characters video and oh my gosh what an achievement! Mindblowingly thorough and weirdly moving and so compelling I had to give up trying to do something else while I watched it. I have so many big feelings I wanted to talk about them so scroll down for that.

Automated text generation has existed for decades. "Dead internet" is from 2016. Markov chain text generation dates to at least 1984. The incentives to algorithmicly generate web text have been around since before 2010. Huge swaths of the internet have been case for seo/advertising slop for decades.

here's how I made these guys (and you can too!), starting with supplies. you'll need:
• reasonably sturdy paper (think cardstock)
• non-woven fabric, like felt
• sashiko or embroidery thread (multiple colors)
• an embroidery needle
• stuffing (I use textile scraps)
• twine or cord (for hanging)
