Not to be annoying on main, but I'm sharing this post again because I'm seeing too many posts about SMT being "better" (joking or otherwise). Yeah, maybe *this year* they are, but all three societies have a huge amount of work to do to even deserve the word "better."
Cold take, but AMS, SEM, and SMT all have huge issues, and none of them are "better" than the other. It's just that pretty much every year, one society/discipline likes to go the extra mile.

Hmm, maybe I should join the American Meteorological Society instead (it's only $20/year for students…!), says the person whose only grasp of meteorology is that the Weather Channel had A+ music.
You know, I'm very happy that the American Mathematical Society and the American Meteorological Society are what pop up first when you type AMS in the search engine. Good for you both, bury a different AMS six feet under.

This photo was from a couple days ago, but damn, once again, I really wish I were her. (Current weather is cloudy and cool temps, so she has opted to snooze under the covers, lol.)

Opinion column: Mamdani won't save the democrats
Me: good, I don't want him to, I want him to deliver on his platform promises for NYC, I want him to make a place where I could be safe and proud to be trans, I want him to make a place where immigrants are safe and flourishing, like he ran on

OpenAI pirated large numbers of books and used them to train models.

OpenAI then deleted the dataset with the pirated books, and employees sent each other messages about doing so.

A lawsuit could now force the company to pay $150,000 per book, adding up to billions in damages.

I hope everyone on Mamdani’s campaign team gets this printed on commemorative t-shirts
Not really a crashout but probably worth putting here for uh, archival purposes

Please, PLEASE, I am begging you as both a parent and someone who is sick of all this THIS, go vote for your school boards. Even if you don't have kids, that's how these reactionary dipshits got their feet in, that's where the book bans and library cuts start.

I’m kind of preaching to the choir here or whatever the appropriate phrase is, but vote YES for #Prop50, Californians!

thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

I'm so goddamn tired of saying this but: this is it.

All the worrying that trans folks have had since he took office? This is why. This is the first step on a short road that ends with the criminalization of trans existence in the US. It isn't doomsaying. It isn't panic. It's right in front of us.

Big yikes. Glad I ditched Acrobat a while ago—
I was opening a bunch of PDFs in acrobat yesterday and my computer's fans were going wild. I have a lot of RAM so this was surprising to me. Turns out Acrobat now generates AI summaries by default when you open a file, instead of just asking if you want one (which I never do).

The UC Regents finally released the “settlement agreement” the Trump administration proposed in August. It’s a doozy.

UC alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, donors—and all citizens of California:

Now is the time to let the UC Regents know you do not want them to sign this bad deal.

I’ve thought about this article every day for 14 days. It so perfectly encapsulates why showing up in all of our humanity beats machines every single time. “What A.I. can’t do is feel the shape of silence after someone says something so honest we forget we’re here to learn.”

Nope. That’s my job.
