i thought about the process as unlocking some doors. you don’t necessarily have to walk through them anytime soon, but unblocking the exits takes time and effort (and money). unlock them now just in case.
If you are a trans person and you think you might need to leave the country, I implore you: start now. Not just thinking. Planning. Because it’s harder than you think.
