I've made a bunch of graphic novels. Most recent: CAROUSEL SUMMER (kids) and I HATED YOU IN HIGH SCHOOL (adults).

I teach comics & illustration around Vancouver. I spend my spare time sewing.

Truly the best part of making my own clothes is that there's always a lil fabric left over & it's really important to hold onto it (not JUST to satisfy my hoarder tendencies) so that if I ever need to mend or size up a garment, I can do it in a way that blends in!

mismatch examples like: characters looking at a lock on a door and talking about needing to "crack the code" to get through, but the lock that is drawn is a padlock that can only be unlocked with a key.... not a code. So strange to not catch that during revisions!
it was unfortunate because i don't think anyone was necessarily "bad" at their role, but a lot of the book didn't quite make sense because of the difference between text + image. Probably something the editor should have caught. It was just sort of a sad missed opportunity.

i had the most puzzling experience reading a gn last night where it became clear that no part of the creative team could have been communicating directly with each other because there were so many mismatches between what the dialogue was saying and what was depicted in the art. it was so strange.

I have finished way fewer books this year than last year. Hopefully I'll sneak in a couple more onto my "read" list during december. Tbh I started a lot of books I just really did not like this year & then abandoned them haha.

For people who think book banning isn't a big deal because even if they're not available in libraries and schools, you can still buy them--this is an elitist argument. Most kids ONLY have access to books from their library. Libraries ensure info access for all. Libraries are vital in democracies.
It's not a badge of honor when books get banned. It stinks for everyone. For the book creators, who worked hard to create something special that now won't be shared. The kids who miss out. The librarians and teachers who are treated like criminals. And taxpayers who have to pay for this nonsense.

I've got friends and family still dealing with trauma from their experiences with involuntary care growing up. Often young people turn to substance use in an attempt to cope or escape from high-control households. "Strengthening access to involuntary care" means empowering their abusers.
Premier Eby will have announcement tmrw about "strengthening access to involuntary care for young people."

My copy of an old project came in the mail today. 3 years ago I attended a conference at UBC that paired cartoonists with researchers working in the field of migration with the goal of creating comics together. It was a very interesting experience.

The one year anniversary of Yoon's failed martial law takeover just passed and lots of untold stories came out proving that THE ONLY REASON KOREA IS STILL A FREE COUNTRY IS BECAUSE PEOPLE DISOBEYED ILLEGAL ORDERS.

The coup was over in hours because people said no.

I don't care if a non-disabled person accesses a disability accommodation for the same reason I don't care if a child whose parents are rich gets free lunch at school. We don't need to means test being a kind person. I have better things to do with my time than be a cop over social services.

We need to talk about Bill 9, Bill 9 and Bill C-9.

Somehow, they’re ALL awful — and they all infringe on the freedoms of Canadians, from trans Canadians, to visibly religious Canadians, to Canadians protesting genocide.

Can we agree: no more Bill 9s until we figure out what the hell is going on?

We got some new data on Vancouver's housing market today that doesn't really change our understanding of things, but does underline how we're in a new normal, and that the shoe is still falling for developers and landlords.

Comes with charts!
Greater Vancouver looks set for lowest year of housing sales this century | CBC News
Monthly data provided by Greater Vancouver Realtors showed 1,846 residential properties were sold in November, continuing a three-year period of relatively stable month-over-month sale figures.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.
