A great read about a former favorite (and makes sense of the threat to make mincemeat out of somebody)
In honor of the holiday, sharing once again one of my favorite pieces to ever run in the Reader, courtesy of the late Cliff Doerksen. (It's long but so worth it, I promise!) chicagoreader.com/food/food-dr...

It’s never too early to look at seed catalogs!
The Internet Archive just released tens of thousands of seed catalogs, spanning over two centuries!

They are both lovely and interesting. Check them out!

AND supporting your local library is super important! If you actually DO want books to be available to everyone, the library *already exists* and is staffed by the people who are deep in the trenches of fighting censorship! Supporting the library is doing actual good for your community!
TAPS SCREEN

For like the zillionth time: Libraries are FREE for you, but WE still get compensated for our work!!
Just saw someone claim that authors who want to be paid for their work are "class traitors" because we "only let the wealthy" read our books, and I think I need to go into the woods to scream into the night for a bit.

It's $5, not your first-born child! I need that $5 for health insurance!

I dislike nostalgia. Also? I remember the joy of being introduced to this song of a true character by a true character, back when radio had room for the offbeat. And it's not me at my desk today, tearing up at the loss of it all. Rest in power, Pierre Robert and Alice Brock.

The Wall of Awful is a real thing. (Not my coinage, I just recognize it.)
It's hard to get neurotypicals to understand "I didn't do the task because I was so intensely aware of the need to do this that my brain built a wall around the concept of doing it", so we just say "I didn't do the task because I forgot."

A judge in RI issued a permanent injunction stopping the Administration from dismantling the Institute of Museum & Library Services and nullifying all actions taken to do so.

I know people think I’m too woo-woo about theory and capitalism and markets. But I sincerely believe this kind of degradation of micro-trust is the real social and economic rot. We constantly feel scammed and then we start reacting like marks instead of mutually reliant humans.

My God, this thread
I had a terrible relationship with food that was complicated by the fact that I could eat exactly what doctors told me to, and exercise how they told me to, and it didn't matter. Because I had a metabolic disorder.

But I didn't have PROOF of that, so my mind got pretty fucked up over 30 years.

If you have similar anti-AI hacks, please add them here.
If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

My non-politics-watching friends tell me that I sound crazy when I try to explain things because That Couldn't Possibly Be True.
Someday when this is all over I need someone to write an encyclopedia of the MAGA era so that future generations don’t think we made all this up
