the government which said it was powerless to change the law when the supreme court ruled about trans people is suddenly going to remember very quickly they can do lawmaking when it comes to cracking down on dissent

I usually try to be careful and hold my tongue on social media, for various reasons, but in this instance I just can't.

The Department for Education has begun consultation on its 2026 revisions of the Keeping children safe in education guidance.

I was braced for the worst. This is worse still.

it drives you insane how much erosion of freedom is justified by concern for kids when the people who actually hurt them will never face consequences

anyway I'm just saying, this is why those annoying people who care about privacy and user freedom keep warning people about services like this where you don't have the freedom to move elsewhere.

So please consider that when you're evaluating Discord replacements. Don't just find Discord 2.

a nice thing about when the internet was a bunch of little sites and servers was that it was a lot harder for governments to pressure "the chat provider everyone uses" to implement age verification.

you wanna pressure 300 separate IRC servers? good luck with that. but one company? easy

If there was ever a silver lining to genAI nonsense, it's that there's an increased incentive (verifiable authenticity) for artists to share their processes; a boon for both learning and community building.

Unfortunately, that also means yet another set of non-art skills artists have to develop.

If you're one of the people who decided to ditch Spotify recently and build a non-streaming music collection, here's a timely rerminder that today is a Bandcamp Friday — any music that you purchase on Bandcamp has the platform fees waived, so all proceeds (minus currency conversion) go to the artist

Honestly, I think the think that I'm really enjoying about this hour gesture drawing session that I'm doing every day is that it's just a dedicated space to create imperfect throwaway crap with no temptation to over-expand. It's much easier to experiment when I know I'm not using it for anything.

And in today's episode of "I cannot take it anymore", I have just seen a very serious suggestion that Charity CEOs and/or Chairs should use an LLM to summarise their constitution for new Trustees.

Get the hallucination machine to summarise one of the most important documents. Okay, then.

Completely bewildered by some of the posts I had saved but not interacted with in any other way. Why would I save this rather than pressing literally any other button? That's known only to whatever god or gods there may be in the heavens.

You, an idiot: "'No ethical consumption under capitalism' is a nuanced phrase regarding the inherent unethical nature of profit extraction from workers, and the inescapably of this."

The Epstein files: "Participating in society enables the ultra-rich to do trafficking child sex crimes."

Spend an hour drawing skulls; catch sight of the mirror; get mildly freaked out because I am perceiving my own bone structure.

Damn, those artists were right, you really DO start seeing things different. I hate it (positive).

Egg on my face for having a discussion with my partner the other day about how "the influence of 4chan on modern politics is real but almost definitely overstated."

I am retiring from ever making comment on anything ever again, the world is somehow even stupider than we imagine it to be.
