I believe a thread dedicated to strongwomen will be appreciated
Katie Sandwina or Brumbach (1884 – 1952) was an Austrian American circus strongwoman.
In 1902 she defeated the famous strongman Eugen Sandow in a weightlifting contest in New York City.

is it time to bust out my "bigfoot is bears" photo collection again? if your mental image of a bear is a thick-furred, fat glossy male bear in autumn, you're probably not prepared for how weird their proportions can look in spring, or when walking upright, like they frequently do.

between the pigeon show at the fringe festival and the monthly pigeon mail club and the pigeon ceramic installation at the outdoor art fair this past summer and NOW the toronto wildlife centre posting a video about why pigeons are great, are we experiencing a pigeon-aissance???

Camera movement has existed longer than we might think, with pans becoming common in the 1900s.

Early filmmakers also simulated movement. This 1908 fairy tale THE GRATEFUL LITTLE MICE gives the illusion of a zoom by pulling the performers and prop book toward the camera. It's nearly seamless.

In 1582, a papal bull introduced the Gregorian calendar, still used today by most of the world. Because it’s 11 days ahead of the Julian calendar, countries introducing it simply skipped a third of October, and if you scroll back far enough in the iPhone calendar app you can see it change

finished the hunter's tale by margaret frevisse and I was not ready for how the story is less about the death of a cruel, brutal patriarch and much more about how in the aftermath, a family struggles to open up to each other and to themselves after having shut everything away for safety

@explorenoma.bsky.social NOMA has an entire wall of 19th c. Palissy Ware...
“This menagerie [was] made in the late 1800s, but were a direct tribute to the ‘rustic-ware’ platters made by sixteenth-century naturalist/artist Bernard Palissy (French, 1510-1590).”
