Kalb al Akrab — Antares, the heart of the Scorpion, and the loads of dust and other stars in its region in the sky. Might even have snuck in an asteroid or three in there :)

Photo of the region surrounding Antares (bright orange star near the middle of the picture) in the sky. Thousands of stars in various shades of orange, blue, and near white can be seen in the field, which has a limiting magnitude of approximately 13.2. Some of the nebulae in the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex can be faintly seen near the brightest stars, including IC 4606 (Antares), IC 4605 (i Sco), IC 4603 (HIP 80462), IC 4604 (rho Oph), SH 2-9 (Alniyat). Many dark dust clouds are also visible through the area, especially to the left of Antares, spreading towards the bottom left of the image.

This is a real image of what a new solar system looks like.

The light from the central star is blocked, so it's possible to see the lanes of cleared-up dust around it.

And that small, yellowish blob at lower right?

That's a whole, brand new planet.

Today our team released findings on the nature of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, based on our first round of JWST observations. The data are incredible: Not only did we detect and map gas and dust in the coma, but we found that 3I is one of the most CO2 rich comets ever seen! Check it out:

Here's the quarter Moon from about a week ago. You can juuust see the Lunar X near the top left, and the Lunar V near the top middle — these are a light-and-shadow effect created by the rims of a few craters near the terminator for just a few hours every first quarter

The waxing quarter Moon of Wednesday, 2025-07-02. The colours are gently enhanced to show the subtle colour differences that exist on the Moon's surface due to varying mineral composition. Near the terminator, both the Lunar X and lunar Y light-and-shadow effects are visible. Cropped view of the previous image, zoomed into the area containing the previously mentioned Lunar X and Lunar V, which are circled and labelled. The X is formed from the rims of the craters Blanchinus, La Caille, and Purbach, while the V is formed from the rim of the Ukert crater plus a few small craters that surround it.

Look at the Trifid Nebula.

Never seen or known it to be surrounded in full by the blue reflection nebula, and I have photographed it many times.

Full announcement happening at 8am LA time (just before the Pulsar Conference starts here), which I think is about 1am Sydney time.

A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. The image focuses on a collection of interacting galaxies connected by delicate streams of stars. At top center lies a large elliptical galaxy that is dense and smooth, like a polished stone glowing with golden light. Like delicate spider silk or stretched taffy, these stellar bridges link the large elliptical to the few larger galaxies beneath, evidence of past collisions. All throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors against the black of space. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black. A cosmic tapestry of glowing tan and pink gas clouds with dark dust lanes. In the upper right, the Trifid Nebula resembles a small flower in space. Its soft, pinkish gas petals are surrounded by blue gas, and streaked with dark, finger-like veins of dust that divide it into three parts. It radiates a gentle, misty glow, diffuse and soft like the warmth of breath on a cold hand. To the lower left, the much larger Lagoon Nebula stretches wide like a churning sea of magenta gas, with bright blue, knotted clumps sprinkled throughout where new stars are born. Both nebulae are embedded in a soft tan backdrop of gas that is brighter on the left than on the right, etched with dark tendrils of dust and sprinkled with the pinpricks of millions of stars. To the lower left is a region filled with the hundreds of golden glittering gems of a distant galaxy cluster. Trying solar photography again, there's some nice active regions right in the middle! AR 4100 is just below centre, and AR 4099 is just above and to the left. AR4100 produced a huge flare earlier that should light up the auroras in the coming nights!

NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.
