See that small, moving splotch?

That's 3I/ATLAS, a comet that formed in a different star system, photographed from Mars orbit by the ESA Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter.

This is a real image of what a new solar system looks like.

The light from the central star is blocked, so it's possible to see the lanes of cleared-up dust around it.

And that small, yellowish blob at lower right?

That's a whole, brand new planet.

Today our team released findings on the nature of the interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, based on our first round of JWST observations. The data are incredible: Not only did we detect and map gas and dust in the coma, but we found that 3I is one of the most CO2 rich comets ever seen! Check it out:
JWST detection of a carbon dioxide dominated gas coma surrounding interstellar object 3I/ATLAS
3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object to visit our Solar System, and only the second to display a clear coma. Infrared spectroscopy with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) provides th...

vcs fiquem de olho que se o PL 2628 passar do jeito que tá escrito já já isso vai ser o Brasil
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.
August 22, 2025 at 9:07 PM

Here's the quarter Moon from about a week ago. You can juuust see the Lunar X near the top left, and the Lunar V near the top middle — these are a light-and-shadow effect created by the rims of a few craters near the terminator for just a few hours every first quarter

#astrophotography community here: do your thing! Did anyone take photos of Saturn on July 5th? Would've been after ~4am Eastern time.
Amplifying the call from Marc Delcroix and co. over the weekend: the team are looking to verify/refute a potential impact on #Saturn on July 5th, 09:00-09:15UT. Videos taken by amateur observers at that time might hold the key. This 📸 credit: Mario Rana

OMG.

Look at the Trifid Nebula.

Never seen or known it to be surrounded in full by the blue reflection nebula, and I have photographed it many times.

Full announcement happening at 8am LA time (just before the Pulsar Conference starts here), which I think is about 1am Sydney time.

Can't wait!

Trying solar photography again, there's some nice active regions right in the middle! AR 4100 is just below centre, and AR 4099 is just above and to the left. AR4100 produced a huge flare earlier that should light up the auroras in the coming nights!

R Doradus is a huge star. Each of these bubbles is 50-75 times the diameter of our entire Sun! 🧪🔭

NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell ~1.6% in the first quarter and have now been flat or down for more than a year. This is the first time on record that emissions are falling due to clean energy growth, not slow power demand.
