I swore an oath to the Constitution in 1986. I've upheld it through 25 years of service and every day since I retired.

If Trump's trying to intimidate me, it won’t work. I’ve given too much to our country to be silenced by bullies who care more about power than the Constitution.

Recorded this day, 1973: The band's European tour arrives in Stockholm for a gig televised on Swedish TV. Despite Miles occasionally wrestling a faulty trumpet mic this is some of the best footage of the period- fascinating to watch the interaction between the musicians.

On October 16, 1968, winning sprinters Tommie Smith and Dr. John Carlos raised their gloved fists during medal presentations at the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, while the national anthem was played. There were both immediate & long-lasting impacts to their protest. (more: alt text)
Tommie Smith, who won the gold medal for the men's 200-meter race at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, set a new world record, while John Carlos finished third to win the bronze medal. Australian Peter Norman (seen at left) wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights pin, and stood in solidarity with their protest. Both athletes planned to wear black gloves during their protest at the medal ceremony, but John Carlos accidentally left his gloves in the Olympic Village. They both shared Smith's gloves, one glove on the opposite hand they intended. Smith wore the right glove, symbolizing Black Power, while Carlos wore the left glove, which, when combined with Smith's, represented Black unity. Smith and Carlos were immediately suspended from the U.S. team and expelled from the Olympics by the International Olympic Committee. Upon returning to the United States, they were widely ostracized by the sporting establishment and faced intense criticism and abuse. Their families received death threats and hate mail. They were booed in the stadium during the ceremony and faced condemnation from many media outlets and their own schools and cities. The salute became one of the most enduring images of protest in sports history, symbolizing a stand against racial inequality and police brutality. The act has inspired subsequent athletes and activists to use their platforms for social justice, with Smith and Carlos becoming icons for the fight for equality. While the immediate aftermath was harsh, their actions were eventually recognized for their significance. Both men received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in 2008, and they have been honored by organizations like the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee for their legacy. Their protest helped bridge the gap between sports and civil rights, demonstrating that athletes could use their success on the world stage to advocate for human rights globally.

Happy Birthday to trumpeter, composer, educator & American culture advocate Wynton Marsalis, born October 18, 1961, in New Orleans, LA, into a family of esteemed musicians. I remember the day his debut LP arrived in the record store where I worked. A seismic shift in the jazz world. (More: alt text)
Growing up in the city where jazz was born, he developed a dual passion for jazz and classical music, receiving his first trumpet at age six and later attending the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City. Marsalis quickly gained attention in both musical worlds, joining Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1980 before forming his own band in 1981. he impact of Wynton Marsalis’ self-titled debut is immeasurable. Released 40 years ago, the album introduced the wider jazz world to a preening trumpeter from New Orleans whose playing synthesized the styles of some of the instrument’s greatest innovators, such as Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Fats Navarro, and Lee Morgan. The prophetic debut LP 'Wynton Marsalis' (Columbia, 1982) triggered a seismic shift in the jazz world, especially within the record industry. The album’s success reignited a strong interest among major labels in signing young jazz artists who were interested in playing acoustic postbop. The LP’s artwork came with another throwback: eloquent liner notes, written by Stanley Crouch. To bolster more excitement, Columbia released a complementary promo LP that featured Ed Williams interviewing Marsalis about the music. In a remarkable display of his versatility, he made history in 1983 as the first artist to win Grammy Awards in both jazz and classical categories in the same year, a feat he repeated in 1984. Beyond his career as a performer and recording artist, Marsalis has been a tireless champion for jazz and music education. In 1987, he co-founded the Jazz at Lincoln Center program, which he has since led as its artistic and managing director. Under his leadership, Jazz at Lincoln Center has grown into an international institution with its own dedicated venue, Frederick P. Rose Hall, a home for performance, education, and broadcast. Marsalis has also written and hosted educational television and radio series and published several books on jazz, demonstrating his profound commitment to teaching the history and principles of the music to a wide audience. These are the ten albums I have by Marsalis in my iTunes library, among the dozens of recordings he's released over the years. Marsalis's career is decorated with numerous accolades that reflect his significant impact on American culture. In 1997, he made history again by becoming the first jazz artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his oratorio, 'Blood on the Fields.' He is the recipient of the National Medal of Arts (2005) and the National Humanities Medal (2015), and has been appointed a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Through his work as a musician, composer, and educator, Marsalis has tirelessly worked to restore jazz to a central position in American life, using its principles of improvisation, cooperation, and the blues as a metaphor for democracy.

Jack DeJohnette is a highly influential and versatile American jazz drummer, pianist, and composer. He is celebrated for his innovative approach to drumming, blending elements of jazz, funk, rock, and world music, and has collaborated with many major figures in jazz history, including including Charles Lloyd, Freddie Hubbard, Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, John Abercrombie, Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock and John Scofield. In 1969, DeJohnette left the Bill Evans trio and replaced Tony Williams in Miles Davis's live band. Davis had seen DeJohnette play many times, one of which was during a stint with Evans at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London in 1968, where he also first heard bassist Dave Holland. DeJohnette was the primary drummer on 'Bitches Brew.' DeJohnette and the other musicians saw the 'Bitches Brew' sessions as unstructured and fragmentary, but also innovative: "As the music was being played, as it was developing, Miles would get new ideas ... He'd do a take, and stop, and then get an idea from what had just gone on before, and elaborate on it ... The recording of 'Bitches Brew' was a stream of creative musical energy. One thing was flowing into the next, and we were stopping and starting all the time." DeJohnette played on the live albums that would follow the release of Bitches Brew, taken from concerts at the Fillmore East in New York and Fillmore West in San Francisco. DeJohnette continued to work with Davis for the next three years, which led to collaborations with other Davis band members John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, and Holland; he also drew Keith Jarrett into the band. DeJohnette contributed to such Davis albums as 'Live-Evil' (1971), 'Jack Johnson' (1971), and 'On the Corner' (1972), along with sessions later released on the 1981 compilation album 'Directions.' He left the Davis group in mid-1971. (there's more to his story, but I've run out of room)
