Ringu hit western shores first — but Ju On was also massive. And now there’s dozens of Ringu and Ju On sequels & prequels, they really cashed in.

P.S. Kurosawa’s Cure came out before them both but didn’t gain traction until later, presumably after his other film, Pulse, took off. Both mandatory.

Ringu. 1998. Dir: Hideo Nakata. The film that put modern J-Horror on the map w/ its eerie pacing & sense of dread, steeped in local folklore of ghostly, vengeful spirits. Even the cursed video footage itself looked jarring — simply, it was unlike anything Hollywood. Top shelf.

It seems there’s 3 horror movies this year that are getting a lot of hype, like absurdly so — Sinners, Bring Her Back and Weapons. I haven’t seen Weapons yet but the other 2 aren’t anywhere close to the hype they got.
