First Visit to the Prospect Park Zoo
On 10/7/25 with a friend. Hippos, Wittgenstein, humor. And maybe I influenced the NYBG landscape photography fellowship verbiage.

The App Store Was Always Authoritarian - Infrequently Noted
Apple bent the knee for months, leaving many commentators to ask why. But the reasons are not mysterious: Apple wants things that only the government can provide, things that will defend and extend it...

@zohrankmamdani.bsky.social's address to Muslims resonates with me because 1) I'm capable of empathy and 2) sympathy: my mom is a Filipina immigrant and I remember all the times she worried I might be mistaken for a terrorist because of my appearance, imploring me to shave and look "meek as a lamb"

I found this article after @doughenwood.bsky.social quoted Iggy on Reagan. I like rock well enough but it is entirely believable that so many of its (white, male) lyricists would be attracted to the triumphal (often incoherent) polemics of the right. SAD.

Reminds me of a clip I saw of Rubenstein giving a master class. The student played a brief passage and he said "Too much Czerny!" Meaning the timbre was too strident and the notes sounded too separate.

Pianists' subtle finger movements influence variations in timbre, according to new study
While it is known that auditory characteristics like loudness and tempo are associated with the physical movements of musicians, more subtle features, like timbre (also known as the "tone color" or to...

Camped at Tom Jones shelter in Harriman in 2020. Was very insistent with my buddies to do a proper bear hang. Disappointed to hear there are more bear encounters since the uptick of bad camping/littering since the pandemic. abc7ny.com/bear-attack-...

Writing up the 4 days I spent on my bike riding up through western MA and the Green Mountains. Researching AT shelters, somewhat unrelatedly. The Kay Wood shelter is named after a beloved ATC member and the plaque on the side ends with "Enjoy - Please Remember Others".

Relistening to Cindy Lee's beguiling 2024 "Diamond Jubilee". So unusually generous and beautiful. Within the first handful of tracks, I can't help but to hear little bits and pieces of "Here Come the Warm Jets". The first verse is reminiscent of "On Some Faraway Beach" lyrically and melodically.
