As a pediatrician I’m deeply disappointed and worried by yesterdays #ACIP decision to delay the newborn Hepatitis B vaccination. While it in itself is bad policy that will kill children, it’s actually more concerning for what it portends:

The ACIP Committee which has exactly 0 general pediatricians just voted 6-4 to recommend that we do lab draws on babies to determine if they need subsequent doses of Hepatitis B vaccine. There are multiple problems with this:

The decision by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to downgrade its recommendations to protect infants from hepatitis B is a dangerous move that will harm children.

Latest from the political officers at NIH: you can no longer ask for approval for an R01 to be >$500k/yr. Unclear whether that means the famous cap is gone and you don’t need permission, or they will no longer allow it at all. Confusing? 🤡

What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Another new policy from the geniuses in NIH leadership.

Apparently, ~70% of grant applications for most mechanisms will not be "triaged", i.e. not discussed at study section.

This is an increase from the ~50% level that has been in place for many years.

I don't know the rationale for this

Bluetorial-Jim Watson

I met Jim Watson a few times but did not know him well. However, I was greatly influenced by his book “The Double Helix”. He was a complicated human being with some very, very bad features, but some good contributions.

What follows is my personal perspective.

This is your periodic reminder that classification criteria aren’t diagnostic criteria. They don’t capture the breadth and depth of a disease, but rather a well phenotyped population for research.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
