Shutting down medical research — not just within NIH, but everywhere that’s funded by NIH — will have long-term effects on medicine & short-term effects on state, higher education & hospital budgets. This affects all of us, not just researchers.
The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!

That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

The key to understanding this is that no sensible outfit would try to court a conservative audience with journalism; Republicans hate journalism.

The purpose isn't to expand the audience, it's to remind staff they are expected to slant coverage and soak liberal readers with conservative propaganda.

At a certain point this whole billionaire owning mass and legacy media thing is going to precipitously crumble like gallium on aluminum.
LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong says his bias meter will use an A.I. patent called the “Reasoning Engine.”

“The meter will be displayed atop a piece of writing to tell readers where it ranks on a scale that will range from ‘far left’ to ‘far right.’”

This is the context in which academia, media, and politicians have landed on “we should stop discussing racism as a systemic problem” as the consensus common sense stance.

something that is especially clear if you have studied colonialism a bit: a load bearing aspect of maintaining even a semblance of democracy (or defending a sitting autocracy from democracy) is having a military that is unwilling to kill its own citizens

This semester I taught a class that about the relationship(s) between universities & cities. I taught with a bit less structure than I would’ve liked, but did so b/c I wasn’t sure what I’d need to do it well.

In reading students’ final reflections…I think we did well. They also had good feedback!

This semester I have legitimately seen just how powerful teaching can be AND this has made me think a lot about what it means to do so in the face of what’s to come. I dunno, like, I want students to go out there and change the world and I want them to be safe. Just thoughts into the void lol.

I think a lot about what @nanjala.bsky.social said once about oligarchy and threats to freedom:

One way to stay free and resist authoritarianism is “resisting the narratives of inevitability”.

We are being told to accept exploitative AI, because our tech overlords say so.

We don’t have to.
