so many of the things we've debated -- for instance, who the real threats to free speech are -- are now, comprehensively, answered

the question now is, what do we do with that?
Given it now seems beyond doubt that the cancel culture/wokeness panic was an all-or-nothing elite defence of - variously - important sex offenders, police impunity, official racism, various forms of hate and bigotry, and actual fascism: is anyone planning to apologise for their personal role in it?

I’m grateful for the experience of editing this symposium for our teacher Kirstie McClure with my friends @megangallagher.bsky.social, @arashdavar.bsky.social, and @fredleept.bsky.social. I am also grateful for the pieces by our contributors which I think do justice to Kirstie’s memory.

The fact that the cases are meritless actually makes them MORE effective for intimidation. Prosecuting actual criminals sends no broader message. They’re saying: “Piss us off and we’ll find some bullshit reason to tie you up in court whether or not we have any chance of making it stick.”

A Minnesota woman observing ICE agents in her car was cornered on one-way streets. An agent approached, called her by name—citing facial recognition. Days later, her Global Entry and TSA privileges were revoked, with no explanation.

If an ICE official can see there being a world without ICE, there's no reason any of us shouldn't be able to do the same thing.

Last week in Minnesota, I watched ordinary people risk their lives to protect their neighbors. In the process, they not only won a significant—though not final—victory against authoritarianism, they proved virtually every MAGA social theory wrong. (gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

The killing of Alex Pretti and the grotesque lying was an overreach by the administration. They've paid a price and had to pull back a bit. But it's when there's some disarray that the democratic opposition needs to intensify the offensive, and turn a marginal tactical success into a major victory.

Of course the challenge is that we on the other side are not trying to 'win' the 'clarifying spasm of violence' but ideally to avoid the worst of it, which is a much harder task.

A valuable thread. The reason why people like me (and loads of others) think the administration is going to lose is not because I'm a pie-in-the-sky idealist. My opinion derives from a basic assessment of the powers available to the parties involved. MAGA does not have a winning hand here
Other folks have already noted much of this, but I think the MAGA 'theory of victory' here is:
1) DHS provocations trigger a riot or attack on agents which
2) Leads to widespread civil unrest in many 'blue' cities so that
3) Trump can invoke the insurrection act and send in the troops...
Curious if anyone has a plausible theory of victory for the administration if it were to invoke the Insurrection Act.

How does the administration "win" in such a scenario?

Best I can tell, it is magical thinking by a certain somebody at the White House, but maybe I'm missing something.
