Gideon Zhi is a master at his very specific craft of hacking binary ROMs to change their scripts, Jiro Dreams of Sushi level shit and I am not exaggerating, we'd have a killer documentary to watch if we lived in a better world
Current progress on splatteworld: here's the retooled shop screen. Not final, but a big step. Item names are placeholder, but we're limited at ~14 characters max due to how inventory screens are laid out. But it's still a damn sight better than 8. Before and after attached.

Elbo got Old Yeller'd in the 2005 GameStop merger
Who's on the cover of this 1992 Electronics Boutique game catalog scanned by VGHF? Why, it's EB mascot Elbo the dog. Hi, Elbo! https://archive.gamehistory.org/item/3e598ac1-b4bc-4f66-a8ba-6463d78782c1

I had the privilege to mentor 2023 honoree rising star @rinoaskyes.bsky.social through a mentorship program that, to my understanding, ran only for that cohort. She deserves so much better than being used for performative clout and cast aside. This is deeply disappointing and baldly transparent.
EXCLUSIVE on @gamedeveloper.bsky.social: not only has The Game Awards not nominated a Future Class for 2025, it's told alumni it "does not have any active programming plans" for the award.

The Future Class page was taken down sometime this year—eliminating a definitive archive of honorees.
The Game Awards' Future Class program remains on ice
Future Class organizer Emily Weir has informed past honorees that The Game Awards has no active plans for the program.

I set this to "warn" and I'm so excited to see which of my friends are canonically rude
If you aren't seeing skeets from some of your fave people, they might have been labeled "Rude" by bsky mods. Idk what they are thinking, I don't need a mommy to tell me who to be buddies with. Anyway, go into Settings > moderation > bluesky moderation (advanced) and turn Rude off.

Today we just got 100 new followers and a bunch of people saying "whoa I've never heard of this" re: the game we have been thumping into the ground for the last 3 years by posting one gif from our earliest demo. If you think you post too much about your game: you probably don't!

I had a short-lived phase where I tried to make "castle" a modifier for "excellent," like adding "way" in front of "cool." It turns out that changing linguistics by yourself is hard and you have to try for more than two days.
"An excellent castle." *Chef Excellence jingle* 🎶

"Well I don't think it's very excellent at all, hmmph!"

"But Princess..."

Y'all, I know two hours is a big time commitment, but this panel I arranged and hosted last month is one of the most important things I've ever done for video game history. The launch of the NES is a crazier story than most people realize, and my guests were extremely generous with their memories.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission recommends testing your smoke and CO alarms monthly, and changing their batteries every year. Be safe everyone!

I had a very brief Space Quest period of maybe a year or two that lined up perfectly with when I first got the internet, so Jess' site was always the template in my head for what I think the world wide web is supposed to be - a place where we share our passions with each other and discover together.
My Space Quest site, Roger Wilco's Virtual Broomcloset, launched 30 years ago this month. That makes it one of the oldest video game fan sites on the web.

To celebrate the milestone, I've updated the site for the first time in ages with tons of new content. Check it out! wiw.org/~jess/roger.html
Roger Wilco's Virtual Broomcloset: The Original Space Quest Fan Site
The web's first and most comprehensive Space Quest fan site, packed with Easter eggs, trivia, downloads, and retrospectives on Sierra's classic adventure series.

This is what archives are for! Developer explains the concept of Skinballs as a way for Saints Row devs to test skin tone in different lighting, archivist pulls a debug build from the collection and demonstrates Skinballs in action. This is the world I want to live in and encourage through my work!
Skinballs always makes me chuckle.

This feels right to me. In the olden times video games were toys, Ninja Turtles action figures occupied the same play space as their game cartridges. Now that games are their own inherent play spaces, there's almost this full circle effect where you add characters in as virtual action figures.
Ignoring the money vortex app Tapped Out, there hasn’t been a proper Simpsons game in 18 years! But in 2025 there aren’t full licensed games anymore, so instead you get a massive season of Fortnite with piecemeal content that’ll cost way more than a $60 game. Simpsons isn’t half assing the crossover

This is the kind of thing that the deep research sickos go nuts for. I wish we could find more! They're extremely endangered, and we can only scan one when we get a second copy (since you have to chop the spine off)

Every game studio should have a Skinballs motivational poster, this is not a joke
On Saints Row we had a debug npc named Skinballs (lol) that was literally just four spheres wrapped in different shades of skin texture so we could test lighting for different skin tones during development. But teams need to plan for that kind of testing with intentionality, and not enough do.

Unlocked! I dig into the history of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween for Atari 2600, actually play them (and take them seriously) and learn Charles "Evil Bong" Band's strange, important part in video game history:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre / Halloween (Wizard Video, 1983) - exp.
Bafflingly, we have Charles Band to thank for these, and, inadvertently, a legendary kusoge.

It has always been important to me that our library is this totally open, free, democratic resource for studying video game history, and we've got a good process. We acquire material, catalog it, digitize it, upload it, promote it, repeat. Our staff size is 2, our overhead low, and our impact huge.
