A short, surprised laugh pushes past Seonghwa's lips, more breath than sound, and Mingi turns to him. He puts his book down and smiles, getting up. The eye contact distracts Seonghwa from how alone they suddenly are. Mingi stops next to his desk, grin still on his lips, softer now. The walls push in a little. "Can I sit with you?" he asks, and Seonghwa nods. They eat their lunch in silence, or Seonghwa does. He offers Mingi some of his but the other refuses politely. He can tell Mingi is looking at him for most of the break. He imagines this is as close as he'll get to feeling like a petri dish. There's a little sweat collecting on his temple, and everything feels too intense in his head for the nothing happening. Mingi notices his abandoned e-reader. "Did I interrupt?" he asks, nodding in its direction. "I can leave if you want to read." Seonghwa is shaking his head no before he finishes his sentence. "That's alright, I just started this one, so nothing interesting yet," he says, wanting Mingi to stay longer. His hands are bigger up close. His lips look soft, cared for. "What's it about?" Mingi asks, still smiling, and Seonghwa comes back to himself. "Oh... it's a random fantasy book I got on sale, standard stuff," he lies badly, discomposed. No one at work has ever asked that. Seonghwa has fantasised about this exact scenario, but not with Mingi and not now, with the gay, predatory siren erotica inches away from Mingi's big fucking hand. "I like fantasy," Mingi says, voice amused, and Seonghwa gets the irrational feeling that he somehow knows. Are they closer than a second ago? "Do you read high fantasy? Or is it more supernatural focused? Creatures of the night and the like?" Seonghwa swallows. He's holding Mingi's gaze and it feels heavy. He can hear his heart beating. Why is he so nervous? Mingi doesn't move closer, doesn't reach for the book, doesn't push, but Seonghwa feels like a rabbit in the hound's line of sight. Lightheaded because the thought makes his blood pool lower. "I read a lot about creatures," he whispers. His skin is cold. "What creatures, hyung? Can I call you hyung?" Mingi's voice is deeper than Seonghwa's, enveloping his brain. His face is a little fuzzy around the edges. Reality shifts in place around them. He hears the clock tick on the wall and has no idea how much time has passed. "Please do." God, what is happening. "Um, all sorts I guess, werewolves, vampires, sirens, aliens, cryptids, that sort of thing..." he trails off. He doesn't understand why he's telling Ming this. "Quite the range," Mingi comments, amused, voice deeper as he continues, "Are you scared when you read about them, hyung? Does it make your heart race?" he asks, buttery tone filtering into Seonghwa's mind heavily. He's hard in his slacks. What the fuck is happening? "What?" he whispers, no force behind the word. Mingi keeps his gaze on Seonghwa, calm as if he were asking about the weather. "I asked if you're afraid." "Of you?" Seonghwa asks without knowing why. It's not what Mingi meant, or... He just cocks an eyebrow, as if to say 'well?' "Yes," he says after a few beats, and it's the truth. Mingi leans into his space, every part of him still while Seonghwa shakes and feels like he's being pulled apart by an invisible force. He comes in close, face disappearing in the crook of Seonghwa's shoulder but not touching any part of him. His breath sends shivers erupting all over Seonghwa's clammy skin. Mingi breathes him in. "You are," he says, pleased. "I can hear how your blood rushes." "Please, Mingi," Seonghwa says, uncomfortable in his pants and in his heart, Mingi's presence overwhelming him in every way but the one he needs. "What would you like, Seonghwa?" A hand is laid on his thigh and he shuts his eyes, desperate. A sharp nail under his chin raises his face so he may look into endless eyes and speak his wish. "You'll have to say it," he says. Seonghwa knows the answer to this one. It isn't hard to admit what is so plainly clear, so logical. There is no other wish but this. "I want you." Mingi smiles. His teeth are all sharp, and there are many. Seonghwa wants him so badly his brain is melting in his skull. Wants him in his mouth, to fill it with those beringed fingers, wants him inside and all over. A claw slips past his lips while another slices his pants. Seonghwa moans when he feels it graze his hard cock. Mingi comes in close again and he's the air itself, water in Seonghwa's lungs, dirt in his throat, fire in his veins. His tongue is sharp and long, and it curls around Seonghwa's earlobe. And what do you know of devils, hyung?

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
