Quick note on my personal activism plans:

This has been one of the worst years I can remember. Besides being consumed by grief, what little energy I have has gone on immediate response to local fascism in the last few months.

To add to the pile of Alice Wong's work (that we should continue reading for years and years to come), here's an archival link to an digital Bitch Media Access Issue that Alice co-edited back in 2021 (apologies for access issues on this archival link) web.archive.org/web/20211104...

Access is still treated as if it’s a privilege, a burden, or a form of special treatment.

God, remember when you could search for a tech tool and find actual reviews and suggestions instead of pages of fake lists and AI nonsense?

I miss that so much.

In 2023 @tom-clark.bsky.social got me to write a chapter for his book on UK poverty about how immigration limbo, which Labour wants more of, makes people destitute. It was the most distressing piece I've ever worked on. We sent a copy to every MP. www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/society/6081...

Bsky hasn’t heard the story about the time that I was giving a virtual colloquium to the Aspen Center for Physics in September 2020 and Lawrence Krauss, Geoff Marcy, Christian Ott all attended as a group

ACP now has a policy that would prevent this from happening, because of that incident 🔭

Alice Wong was one of the few who actually left the world better than when she entered it. A lot of the obituaries are leaving out her work on Covid, her advocacy around masking, and her work on eSims for Gaza. I tried to capture some of that in a post on IG.

Has anyone got a recommendation for cream to soothe the corners of eyes which are dry and cracked? Not from infection, just crying. So many creams say not to use near eyes but eye creams aren't helping much.

Experience tells me I will. I just don't know how.

Going to have to take a week off from the counterprotests I think - I'm in so much pain and my visible spent most of the afternoon beeping at me.

For reference, I'm not supposed to go over 13 points.

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day in the UK. Today I stood across from a Hitler-loving Nazi and his friends who insisted they're the ones who care about our war dead.

They think poppies and services is what it means to honour them. Fetishising symbols while ignoring the reality of war betrays them.
The War Poets
This is about the War Poets, the use of poetry, and the purpose of memorials like the Cenotaph and days like Armistice Day. Like many, I was taught the War Poets at school. It was the first time I …

People's fundamental inability to comprehend large numbers is killing us all. It's bad enough with millions vs billions, but a trillion is so far beyond understanding. No person should ever control that amount of resources. It is quite literally unthinkable.

In 2024, almost 900 members voted to keep their trans-inclusive policy - a policy that has worked peacefully since 2019.

Now, a small campaign group is seeking to overturn that democratic decision through the courts.

The man who almost single handedly caused the death of 600,000 people will become even richer

He’s killed children & the most vulnerable

He dismantled one of the most successful aid programs in the world

He bought an election & installed a fascist
One analytical model shows that, as of November 5th, the dismantling of U.S.A.I.D. has already caused the deaths of 600,000 people, two-thirds of them children. https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/jUzNSc

One of the things I love about him is how he speaks plainly & names the problem: “we don’t have any interest from the top.”

In an age of toxic positivity, which is sprayed upon disabled folks like a firehouse, it’s nice to have someone simply state what the issue is: ppl in charge don’t care.

This is disability visibility.

Mamdani listened. He didn’t pander or talk over the disabled journalist.

He acknowledged his concerns and gave real responses about how he plans to fix them.

1 in 4 Americans has a disability, it’s a huge number of voters.

Having watched a lot of the Traitors from other countries, the reason this #CelebrityTraitors works so much better is because they are actual celebrities from a range of disciplines rather than being exclusively taken from other reality shows.
