I think what's going on here is the Trump-ICE war on Blue America, the sheer awfulness of the imagery of it, is awakening in many people an anti-totalitarian instinct that Dems can speak to effectively. Rogan calling ICE "Gestapo" gets at this.

Quinnipiac gave me unpublished data from new poll and it finds huge, huge, huge percentages of young and working class voters have seen video of Minneapolis shooting.

Majorities of both disapprove of ICE. Pundits are getting the working class/immigration wrong:

“You don’t want militarized people in the streets snatching up people," Joe Rogan said. "Are we really gonna be the Gestapo? Where’s your papers—is that what we’ve come to?”

ICE's horrors are achieving extraordinary penetration in info-spaces Dems need to reach:

We are so far beyond "show us your papers." They don't want to see the papers. We are now into the "give us the names" stage of the occupation.

A St. Paul resident says federal officers knocked on her door and asked her to identify Hmong and Asian households in her North End neighborhood last week.

"We essentially have right-wing content creators guiding the hand of the Justice Department—and in some cases working there themselves."

On the pod, @melissagiragrant.com is really illuminating on Trump's rants, the DOJ rebellion, and plummeting support for ICE:

Trump Tirades about Shooting Get Darker as Polls Turn Brutal on ICE
As new polling shows Trump is losing the argument over the Minneapolis shooting, the writer of a new piece on this horror explains how Trumpworld sees this as an opening to wage open war on Americans.

IMO it depends

➡️ If there's a realignment – Rs beaten so bad that the "nuke the government" crowd is unlikely to have power for decades – things bounce back quickly without major changes

IMO that scenario is unlikely, but possible

Assuming we fix *gestures broadly* how long do you think it takes to rebuild the DOJ/Attorneys offices/other justice apparatuses that have had large numbers of people leave over things like this?

Biden was President. He had the agencies and the tanks. Not Roberts. Bidens job was to protect the country. When the people in the robes are giving someone a Get Out of Jail Free Forever card, Joe needs to be the President with the agencies and the tanks. Would that be "extrajuducial"? Absolutely

A teenage boy was walking home in Minneapolis yesterday when four masked men jumped out of a van & questioned him - with no parent or guardian present.

He was bundled into the van & taken away.

Bystanders heard the boy say: “Can I just go home?”

I don’t know how America comes back from all this.

Agree with @paulwaldman.bsky.social here: Dems need to be wiling to say, at a minimum, that "ICE needs to be stripped down to the studs." They're going to get asked this question a lot, and they should articulate that as the consensus party position.

Said it a year ago and I'm saying it now. Governors in blue states should have been gaming this situation out as soon as Trump was fucking with FEMA money during the fires. This was always the end point.

"Gotta pay the king! No mechanism not to pay the king!" is not an answer.
I'm guessing if the government turns off things my federal taxes are paying for then I have a legal case to not pay my full federal tax bill
can't help but think they're experimenting with the Blue State "off" switch

Bad move by @gallego.senate.gov, saying this without telling people Trump has repeatedly been offered immigration "deals" and turned them down. In 2018 Dems offered him $25 billion for wall in exchange for Dreamers; he said no. Dems offered GOP big border bill in 2024; he told Rs to kill it.

People don't want to accept that the primary reason that we have Trump today is that the previous administration completely failed. It should have never gotten to the point where it was in the so-called hands of the voters. It was already too late by then.

Exactly. Typical swing voters don't sit in the middle and swing from left to right, they swing from one set of incoherent and ill-informed views to another.

Hence lots of Trump voters discovering tariffs in April 2025 and the general dismay with his immigration policies, both of which he ran on.
what they *aren't* is particularly ideologically moderate, that's a self-serving lie from centrists. they much worse than that: ideologically incoherent, against bad stuff and in favor of good stuff hypothetically but with no underlying principles to guide them

All the talk of "balance" in journalism produced a culture where constant sane-washing of the right isn't just allowed, it's expected and required.
The news outlets that have so far covered this have omitted the description of the GoFundMe from the creator himself: "The stupid cunts wanna make a go fund me for the stupod bitch that got what she deserved i made one for the ice officer that did his job lets get this man some money." /
