We need to regulate the online advertising industry so that _advertising as a source of revenue_ actually works for creators.
27 years ago, I helped people build websites. I watched actual webcomic creators make down payments on houses from ad rev. There were 60-70 vendors.

There are some good points in this report, but I'm disappointed not to see a single mention of freelancers or freelancing – freelancers are both holding up the tent of rigorous reporting and getting paid insanely low wages to do so. This is unsustainable and central to American journalism's woes.

If we can only have art from people who "aren't in it for the money" that means we can only have art from privileged middle-class dilettantes. Making art being a viable career is responsible for nearly all worthwhile art, and if it's not a viable career any more we will get drastically less of it.
