Mr President don't listen to the naysayers. Your political program, "Crash the economy and bring back ancient diseases" just needs more time to work

Everyone's dogpiling on this nonsense so I won't repeat the same thing, but I do find it kinda gross how they compared using art books as inspiration to using generated crap.

The thing thats so insidious about using AI this way is that one of the main ways artists get hired are studios looking for art references and they find us and reach out.

This is removing a major avenue to get work if they can just generate nameless derivations of our ideas.

Larian studios guy being like "We just use AI to replace looking for references" needs to hear that very basic lesson we artists learn: you don't make up shit, you look up references to understand how they work in the real world. With AI you make stuff up while doing Captain Planet villain damage.

Guys, it's Count Olaf in a particularly unimaginative CEO disguise.

This week has been a news cycle of "Some "people" have problems with AI, but what if WE are intellectually dry?"
"We know you have some little problems with AI but have you thought about our funbucks?"
"It has a 30% chance to make infinite money for investors, or 30% chance to be the Faro Plague."

Time to jettison @firefox.com
Mozilla has a new CEO and he just announced that Firefox will evolve into a modern AI browser. This is a good example of how management doesn’t understand its own user base and why they go out of their way to install Firefox on Windows, Android, iOS and other devices blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/l...

I was familiar with it before but actually sitting down to read Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is like discovering a new primary color. A bunch of Tom of Finland guys named, like, Grand Funk Railroad and Kiss Alive saying shit like "You actually thought decapitating me would slow me down? Foolish child."

Using GenAI for concept art is especially egregious because that’s the part that actually takes imagination - something GenAI does not have!

I saw a video not too long ago talking about how chatGPT couldn’t create an image of a wine glass filled to the brim.+

This is because people don’t generally fill wine glasses all the way to the top. Nearly all photos of wine glasses filled with wine are going to be a standard pour - that is roughly between 1/3-1/2 a glass depending on its size. MAYBE 2/3 for a heavy pour. But not to the brim.+

Not nearly spilling over like we might see with, say, a glass of beer.

And GenAI can’t imagine. It can’t extrapolate from what it knows to imagine something new. It can only copy and copy and copy what it’s already seen.

But you know what a concept artist can do?

i was made to do the test twice, once i got the feedback "not larian enough and that can't be taught". when i tried again i got through, and they made me remake it with their feedback. then i was summarily ghosted. not even shady start-ups had treated me like this afjhdfa

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

We've heard a lot about the consequences of fracking when it comes to the climate, but this article does a good job of explaining that fracking also has extremely negative consequences for agriculture, farming and ranching-- all vital economic engines in places like West Texas:
Fracking waste threatens Permian Basin water supplies, imperils oil industry plans
Drilling is producting massive amounts of wastewater. That has regulators and companies scrambling for places to put it.

I have spent about a week getting my ass kicked by an outline. Multiple drafts of multiple paths through the story, all hitting dead ends, or taking too long to get to the point. The job is to work through these until I find the one that works. A machine randomizing a hundred more options ain’t it.

America, you have spoken loud and clear: You do not like AI. But what if AI is the way to restart the world’s idea machine?
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

Again I say: how fucking interesting that remote work technology is bad and not worth adopting despite all research pointing to productivity gains, but genAI which offers NOTHING is so important to adopt and force on people who have no use for it despite all the horrible things genAI does

I’m also tired of people looking at art and creative projects as something that needs to be streamlined. That needs all the edges cut off and smoothed down. The capitalism core of art.
