Welcome new followers! I'm a historian of medieval Europe. I've published on late medieval persecution of heresy (and medieval persecution in general). I also research medievalism—how the Middle Ages have been understood, imagined, and used since (including in Russia, the focus of my latest book).

If you assign books via ProQuest Ebook Central, I recommend re-checking the page numbers. I just found out that they now count front matter pages (foreword, etc.) as part of the overall page count. In my case, the page range I assigned to students was off by 20 pages. 🙃 #HigherEd #AcademicSky

After years of "I really should just do it, shouldn't I?" I have finished a professional website for myself: eugene-smelyansky.com It's nothing fancy, just a place to showcase my work all in one place. And hopefully it will be my first step to ditching academia.еdu at some point.

Indiana Jones and the UNESCO World Heritage Convention of 1972
I do think it would be quite the powerful lesson to have a video game wherein Lara Croft and Indiana Jones were arrested by INTERPOL and then you watch as Jones is also denied tenure at U. Chicago. But this is good too. www.independent.co.uk/news/science...

There’s a whole thing in Hanukah about how you’re supposed to “publicize the miracle” except that there are all sorts of exceptions in times of danger.

Because the times that the Jews have lived under have not always been safe.

May the souls of the murdered in Australia be for a blessing.

Noam Chomsky made it very clear that he was a scumbag when he denied the Khmer Rouge genocide back in the 1970s: if you’ve been trying to deny the obvious about him ever since, well, that’s on you.
Well, there's a photo I never expected to see in my life. Noam Chomsky palling around with Steve Bannon.

Would love RFK Jr. to shut about body fluids for once...
RFK Jr: "All of the ingenuity of corporate America has not produced an infant formula that is superior in nutrition and all the qualities that we want to the infant formula that God made, which is the infant formula in a mother's breast."

Got to discuss my book in a colleague’s Modern Europe grad seminar the other day. I don’t get to work with grad students that often, so it was really cool and interesting!

To say nothing of the Roman ruins still housing cats in Rome (shout out to Largo di Torre Argentina cat sanctuary!), Pompeii, and many other places.
What has the Roman military ever done for Britain and for cats? 🐱 Well, a lot, it seems. Romans roads are excellent routes for carrying soldiers, disease, ideas, and felines.

Every single congressional Democrat needs to be out there, right now, insisting that Pete Hegseth resign right now and announcing that he will be held accountable for committing war crimes.

If you do not demand accountability here and now, they will only become more emboldened.
Exclusive: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave an order to “kill everybody” in the first strike on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean. After two men survived, the mission commander ordered a second strike to comply with Hegseth’s instructions, according to two sources.

Some years ago, my wife was on a whale watching tour in SoCal and they happened upon a blue whale. She sent me a video and, after watching it, I completely understood why ancient mariners believed that giant sea serpents were real.
Ok one more video. the most beautiful fluke I've seen. edited for EXTRA BEAUTY!!!
