I’m so sorry, Thomas! A friend of mine went through something very similar while grieving. Eventually it passed and she was able to write again. Be kind to yourself!

Also I would argue that a research-driven essay is already more AI-proof than other assignments, especially if it is scaffolded and lets students “show their work” (posing research questions, finding and interpreting sources, developing a thesis, outlining, etc.) in stages throughout the semester.
