15 x 2 is 30
So it’s 30 x 18
18 x 3 is 54
So it’s 540
It's Mental Math Monday! Pam Harris from Math is Figureoutable wants to know how you would mentally calculate 15×36. Please share how you would do it in the comments.

In addition to "slop", the over-eager introduction of Gen "AI" into everything feels increasingly like the moments when lead went into paint or asbestos when into every ceiling.

Society will be cleaning up the various types of damage for far longer than the profiteers will exist.
Schoolslop. Yes! That's exactly what it is. A great breakdown of what teaching is like in high school rn.

I'm really excited that after my experience in Denver, NCTE is going to go into my national conference rotation! It felt like a very practical and supportive space for teachers of English. CCCC and NCTE are the two national conferences in my field, and I've also enjoyed SAMLA, SEACS, & PCA/ACA --

So many jobs are not about creating shareholder value and I get that almost my entire social circle is teachers & therapists but there are ways to not work for Lockheed Martin
But the issue that we have is that capitalism doesn't coordinate effort to ensure a better outcome for all, we're not all getting up at 7am to ensure everyone is healthy, well fed and able to enjoy their life, we're getting up at 7am to work the feedslop machine at the Torment Nexus
“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives

We are pleased to inform you that, to course correct for an over-abundance of gay guys, we're focusing solely on bisexual white women.

even when AI is surveying reputable sources, we shouldn't forget that summarizing and synthesizing are interpretive activities that involve selecting what is most significant or salient to ongoing discussions. even if AI were unbiased, this is creative work that we should be doing.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

"You're my hope. You’ve saved my life more than you'll ever know, on days you didn't know, and you're the reason I'm alive today. And I could never thank you enough for helping me stay one more day."

This is the message that @mychal3ts.bsky.social delivered to teachers at #NCTE25 today.

I don't understand how anyone can watch how blatantly Grok is manipulated to answer the way ownership desires it to and then act like the other LLM chatbots couldn't possibly be similarly but less obviously compromised to produce responses in whatever way corporate interests and priorities dictate.

the funniest part about this post is that it's not an image
I am devastated to confirm that changing to an image only feed on Bsky, only watching YouTube content from channels I actively subscribe to, and not being on any other social media feeds has improved my life in immeasurable and profound ways.

Are we really at a stage in public education where we consider it OK to have literally Google-branded schoolchildren whose learner identities are tied to being "responsible AI" users of private for-profit technologies?

#NCTE25 talk was very fun! Also a little chaotic! It’s the start of my thinking about a particular strand of alternative assessment issue, and definitely wasn’t like, a polished or satisfyingly complete set of ideas. I’m so grateful for the folks that came to 45 minutes (!!) of my own deal!!

Biggest shocker at my talk today, which is consistent with my other talks and media stuff, is that the acceptance rate for men and women are different at highly selective institutions. Men have a much higher acceptance rate because most colleges are scared to go beyond a 60/40 ratio.

Study after study shows that using LLMs is bad for cognition, bad for learning, bad for understanding, bad for mental health. So why are our schools and universities still relentlessly pushing them?
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Did I pay $0 for lodging and $0 for a rental car due to the love and care of family members in CO? Yes.
So expense that, baby!!
