A Trump supporter started murdering his way through an assassination list of Democratic law makers FIVE MONTHS AGO. He murdered my colleague Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark — and attempted to assassinate my dear friend John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. I was also on the hit list. WTF

Disney/ABC have a responsibility to refuse to participate in corruption.

Kimmel must be reinstated. If Disney/ABC agree to this extortion then perhaps creatives + workers should consider collective action to push back. Same w/buying park + cruise tickets if they bow.

In short, force them to try to rule by naked force because they *do not* have enough force and the very nakedness of it will mean they have less and less.

The Civil Rights movement overcame far more with far less, if we had a fraction of their courage, we'll win.

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

Declaring a fake emergency as an excuse to deploy the military to police civilians is one of the most canonical examples of authoritarian takeovers.

Overseas, people see clearly what Trump is doing. Here in America most people — especially those with power or influence — are in denial.

start acting like this until he is the dimmest, most unremarkable light among anti-trump firebrands
Newsom: "He doesn't play by a different set of rules. He doesn't believe in the rules. As a consequence, we need to disabuse ourselves of the way things have been done. It's not enough to just hold hands, have a candlelight vigil, talk about way the world should be...we have got to meet fire w/fire"

just want to share this Lincoln line from his "electric cords" speech.

"So I say in relation to the principle that all men are created equal, let it be as nearly reached as we can. If we cannot give freedom to every creature, let us do nothing that will impose slavery upon any other creature."

Calling for the starvation of a people is incitement to genocide.

Incitement to genocide is a crime under both U.S. and international law.

If you refuse to endorse the overwhelmingly popular Democratic nominee for mayor of America's largest city, you should not be leading Democrats in the U.S. House
Hakeem Jeffries again declines to endorse Zohran Mamdani, saying "I don't know him well."

CHRIS HAYES: Why are you not endorsing the guy that won the democratic primary in a contested election in your backyard?

JEFFRIES: I didn't get involved in that primary election, and I don't know him well.

The antipathy for the Department of Education is the most enduring relic of the cause that birthed the modern GOP: not having to go to school with Black people.

That’s the thing: Brazil is the living, breathing example of what the US should have done to deal with someone who tried to overturn an election loss. It shows it’s possible, and they can’t let that stand.
Personal bond (Bolsonaro's son was at the WH on Jan 5 2021 meeting with Jared and Ivanka 🤔) and Brazil holding Bolsonaro accountable is deeply threatening to Trump.
Maybe: there could be a personal bond there, which he’s known to make with (aligned) world leaders.

I’d tap in @ruthbenghiat.bsky.social about the psychology of strongmen with a bottomless need to exert control or use power to show dominance, or @maryltrump.bsky.social about why he’s this way.

Everyone like this needs to be hounded out of the Democratic Party. These are people who genuinely believe a permanent Trump/GOP trifecta is a better outcome than policy being slightly left of their preferences. They are a major reason why millions of people who agree with Dems don't bother to vote.

I had the same reaction. Mamdani is such a threat in their view that they had to essentially reverse their non-endorsement policy. If Cuomo was cruising to victory, I doubt this piece would be written.
NYT Ed Board said last year that they aren’t doing local endorsements anymore, but they couldn’t help themselves from writing a gross roundabout endorsement of Cuomo.

Yes, Republicans have also been the target of inexcusable violence, but this isn't a "both sides" issue.
