It is best to love first what you are fitted to love, I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots, and the soil of the Shire is deep.

I plan to show up to the @indivisible.org @50501movement.bsky.social “No Kings” day of protest Oct 18 carrying our nation’s most powerful symbol. The stars and stripes stands for equality, for freedom, for the rule of law- the opposite of an autocratic King. I hope you’ll join me with your flag.

Carpentry, that’s good. What is a human body except a series of wooden boards.

At that moment I felt ungovernable rage and honestly It was what kept me alive.

Two neurosurgeons who I will be forever grateful towards.

The undergraduate intern was especially galling to me because I was not prepared to have my potential last decision on earth serve as a lesson to a college sophomore.

No reflection on her, that was just how I felt.

I was in complete flight or fight mode and I would have fought anyone if I could have lifted my arms.

The short version is they were going to cut into the front of my neck, shove my trachea to one side and replace three vertebrae with titanium while removing the epidural abscess on my spine.

This is a few days ahead of schedule, but I have never been more of an asshole than when some middle aged lady came in with an undergraduate intern to have me sign a consent form for my surgery.

Last year, when I was in the hospital and had to sign off on a form that said “your chances of survival are a coin toss at best” I bitterly regretted it because I knew that I couldn’t tell my kids or others I loved goodbye or give them a blessing or say how I felt.

Life is so beautiful, and I am glad that I could recognize that even before I had my little misfortune.

I am also cognizant that I am extremely lucky that I can end and begin my days by saying “I love you”

This is one of the last photos I took as a healthy person before getting sick last year.

Last night, I kissed my wife and said “I love you” and it was the last thing I said before falling asleep.

Today, I said “who loves a dog? I do” to my Labrador and that was the first words I said.

We live in a beautiful world.
Evening on a gloriously clear autumnal day. The sun sets over a calm Puget sound, skipping reflections off the water like a smooth pebble on a smooth surface. A family on the left stops to admire the view while cirrus clouds streak overhead

When I was a young PV2 in the year ‘03 I discovered that Western Washington contains everything that is admirable about Minnesota but with better weather. I’m sure that’s also true of Michigan.

Say what you will, when Skattebo comes barreling through on a trap you’re going to want a Bobby Wagner type to come up and meet him.

Who else is going to blow up the TE on a drag or blitz the A gap and get to the QB on one of those incessant short screens?

Question and answer is not a civilized form of conversation. Where are you from, what do you do and things of that nature. Let’s talk about feigned retreats and gaps in the cover two.

I once sat across from a medical doctor from Battle, England at a wedding reception and we talked exclusively about Hastings for two hours while our wives got steadily more frustrated with us.

There’s certainly a place for nuance, but not in a rallying cry.
