A bookish pedestrian in Northern California. Just here to chit-chat (not to represent any orgs, employers, or clients)
Ha, Larry Summers replaced with a guest talk by Tony Blair

But it's hard to imagine that these Very Important People are actually that good at teaching undergrads substantive course material, other than showing off their patina of power...

It's a solid post on its own, but the photo will live in my nightmares for some time. That's education, transit, healthcare, and a number of other services, being eaten by Howard Jarvis.
In the ideal world, California's public revenues would be a more balanced three-legged stool of

- income tax
- sales tax
- property tax

But unfortunately the third leg of the stool was eaten by mad selfish voters in 1978

For better — or worse — California's "Fiscal Outlook" is currently indexed to $NVDA

This illustrates what I've thought of as one of the most annoying trends of the post-2008 tech boom:

The fact that the dude calls his product "Friend"

Just like "Messenger" and "Marketplace" and "Notes" and "Wallet," trying to squat on the most generic of terms...

I ran Bay to Breakers twice, a good number of years ago. Is that sufficient experience with the Sunset for me to be appointed as its next supervisor?

A nice reminder that the state's public health agency serves all Californians:
Join with us, as we honor the experiences and contributions of transgender & nonbinary individuals. We uplift and affirm the courage & resilience of trans lives.

For SFMTA to receive a dedicated bus lane on Van Ness required covering the massive cost and years of effort to rebuild all the unrelated underground utilities

For Waymo to receive a dedicate lane on Van Ness, nothing is required
A Waymo robot apparently disobeyed SFPD, forcing PD to block the failed robot while everyone went around:

California at Van Ness, San Franciso

Waymo does not have to report these incidents to any regulator.

California St Cable Car terminus is shown briefly in this video.

The predictions of @t4america.bsky.social — unfortunately — fully confirmed in a report by @urbaninstitute.bsky.social
Overall, this tells the disappointing reality of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, 4 years after:
—Construction cost inflation ate up most of the increased spending
—There was no move to increase support for transit—in fact, there appears to have been a greater focus on highway than before

While working on my laptop in a coffee shop in North Shattuck (nee Gourmet Ghetto), I can't help but use an LLM to poke fun at the somewhat sanctimonious artwork

If Berkeley actually measured its culinary impact by dollar amount, would be a more accurate representation:

Props to the public information officers and institutional archivists who stash pictures away like a squirrel stores nuts for the future:
Pelosi has made a longstanding mark on the project, including in 2024 at the future northern terminus for California, signing the wall in the Salesforce Transit Center trainbox in downtown San Francisco. Cheers to you and the future of transportation!

I'd read that! Or better yet, Robert Caro could serve as research assistant and Ina Caro can be the author named on the cover for this one
I want Robert Caro to write a book on Pelosi because there's just so much you could probably gleam about the path of America from her story.
with Pelosi retiring from Congress, there goes the last direct descendant of the San Francisco Burton Machine. but in a sense, it was going the way of the dodo since the Gingrich Revolution of 94. felt this story with Phil Burton’s office chair captured the feeling of extinction well

An occasional reminder that when you're writing about the future Congressional representative from San Francisco, his name is spelled "i" before "e"

Step 1: Pass Prop 50 ✅

Step 2: Elect Dems into as many of the redrawn Congressional districts as possible

While I'm not a Sacramento voter, I'm bullish on @drpanmd.bsky.social running on his record as lead author of the state's important school vaccine mandates

A doctor and former California senator is Rep. Kevin Kiley’s latest Democratic challenger
Dr. Richard Pan, who is best known for his school vaccine bills, wants to hold Republicans accountable for slashing health care.

Yes, the time has come for progressives to co-opt Robert Moses -- not the entire problematic package, but to strategically claim some of his accomplishments
At the Unisphere!

"The Mamdani campaign has used iconic New York City landmarks as backdrops throughout the campaign, and it chose another one this morning. The mayor-elect will speak below the Unisphere, the symbol of the 1964 World’s Fair. It was designed as a sign of global interdependence."

California will not be a pawn in the President’s political games.

I’m grateful to the court for putting a stop to this nonsense and ensuring we are able to continue to receive vital transportation dollars that support our public infrastructure and keep our roads safe.
