A bookish pedestrian in Northern California. Just here to chit-chat (not to represent any orgs, employers, or clients)
Ha, a very expensive version of those little two passenger touring vehicles. Is there any origin/destination data available in the aggregate?

Ha, yes! Replace "ideal" with "better" in my post

While property taxes may make up ~1/3 of public revenues in the aggregate across the state, on a per-capita basis, property tax revenues vary wildly...

A Californian in Imperial County receives so many fewer public services funded via property taxes than in Marin County

Do you want a developer building one of their so-called "multi-family products" next to YOUR HOME?!

Unfortunately that also describes the tenure track in too many academic fields...

In the ideal world, California's public revenues would be a more balanced three-legged stool of

- income tax
- sales tax
- property tax

But unfortunately the third leg of the stool was eaten by mad selfish voters in 1978

Keep in mind:

- California taxes personal income (unlike Texas)

- California's income tax has higher rates for higher incomes (progressive!)

- Thanks to those factors, we all publicly benefit from stock/equity compensation (this is good!)

- We just have to be mindful riding both ups and downs

The big red button of True Keynesianism is still there, for leaders bold enough to break its glass case in case of emergency...

FWIW, this is ultimately an antitrust issue. For example, Google is itself wacky name, but they acquired a bunch of funky-named startups and made them generic:

Writely --> Google Docs
XL2Web --> Google Sheets
Keyhole --> Google Earth
Where 2 --> Google Maps

Ha! For what it's worth, Ruth Reichel's mother is one literary creation I'd trust even less for cooking advice (her memoirs open with a memorable scene of food poisoning at a big family party)

How much of that disdain-as-a-rhetorical-device atop an in-crowd-circle-jerk is just NYC media becoming as rarefied as British culture and importing their conventions? I'll take the answer off the air...

FWIW, from what I recall the public editors were effective at articulating that kind of middle ground. They all came from long careers as reporters and editors (rather than as "posters")

Almost all important federal challenges are purely partisan, but reform of the nation's surface transportation funding scheme isn't... because it's so completely broken.
