The House Democratic caucus split three ways on the motion to table (i.e, motion to table) Al Green's resolution to impeach Trump.

140 Democrats voted against killing it.

43 Democrats joined Leadership in voting present.

These 23 voted with Republicans. Shame on them.

Good read on the clear and unambiguous meaning behind the 14th amendment.
I've had some media requests curious about the history of citizenship before the 14th Amendment's birthright citizenship clause. Here are 2 ungated opeds I wrote in advance of my book. 1/
History Shows Why Birthright Citizenship is so Important
The 14th Amendment aimed to overturn restrictive state laws while making the Constitution more inclusive.

Quite the day for Trump: The defeat below, the defeat in Indiana, the defeat on the latest Letitia James case, the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, really bad poll numbers (his handling of the economy numbers threatening to fall into the 20s) He's losing it politically as fast as he is mentally.
Say it again for the folks in the back: "The first time the House has voted to overturn a Trump executive order in this term." 🙌
BREAKING: Democrats and Republicans in Congress just voted to pass the Protect America’s Workforce Act to restore federal workers’ union rights – the first time the House has voted to overturn a Trump executive order in this term. https://bit.ly/4oNyBQc

Stephen Miller is to blame for the evil ICE is doing. Trump is to blame for listening to Miller. The Republican party is to blame for supporting Trump. MAGA voters are to blame for re-electing Trump. There's enough blame for all of them to share.

There are two takes to this, though, right?

1. Telling Trump to go to hell.

2. Actually doing the math that Trump refuses to, and realizing that (even more of) a gerrymander + a blue wave is worse *for the GOP* than the current gerrymander + a blue wave.
The Dems voted 10–0 against the gerrymander, and the Republicans voted against it 21–19.

A majority of the Republican members of the Indiana State Senate just told Trump to go fuck himself.
The Indiana State Senate is 40 Republicans, 10 Democrats. This result is not even close to nothing.

The final paragraph of this statement is FASCINATING.

Dem leadership is clearly trying to imply, in pretty strong terms, that they'll launch an aggressive, vigorous, public impeachment effort if they take back control of the House. But without actually, you know, saying that.

Drip. Drip. Drip.
Significant statement from Jeffries and House Democratic leaders saying they will vote “present” on the motion to table Al Green’s resolution to impeach President Trump. They say they’re “laser-focused on fighting to lower the high cost of living” plus on health care and corruption.

Best thing to come out of Congress in over 25 years is Raskin’s war cry: “…there’s nothing remotely ethical or moral about unilaterally disarming before authoritarians in a game that they’ve created.”
If Indiana Republicans cave to Trump today and agree to rig the 2026 elections, both Illinois and Maryland are in line to respond, notes @nicolelafond.bsky.social. Cites our interview with Rep Jamie Raskin pushing State Sen prez to drop his bizarre opposition:

Met my spouse at Clarion SFFWW in 84, so it's not surprising that I would agree.
Maybe today is the day we also have a conversation about the word “genre” and how a lot of horror is better than the stuff that gets counted as “real cinema” and a lot of SFF writing is higher quality literature than some of the shit publishers call “literary fiction”

Especially for the quality of TNC's responses. Worth your time.

Remember that Trump and his propagandists tried to gaslight you into believing there was no percentage in taking on this fight, that it was hopeless. And a certain cadre of pundits tried to persuade you that Dems didn't dare discuss this in public.

Still not over yet but a big step forward.

BENNIE THOMPSON: Where is antifa headquartered?

GLASHEEN: ... ... ... we are building out the infrastructure right now

Birthright citizenship isn't just a law on the books, it's foundational to how the United States is defined as a country. It is fundamentally illegitimate to "overturn" it. That's not something 6 people in robes get to decide.

We've given SCOTUS an almost theological place as the objective arbiter of the law. But they still rule based on the consent of the govern. They are actively breaking the social contract with an agenda that is arbitrary and illegitimate. It is an imperative that we say no.
