My take: We’re in a war. No one on the side of the authorities, MAGA or not, can be trusted. Only lies will come from official sources unless by accident. Plutocrat media is a fog from which only some truth can be uncovered. Know your enemy. Give nothing away. Expect atrocities. Seek what’s real.

Love to see them dehumanize an autistic child with a phrase that would be better used in Roswell.

This has gone on as long as we’ve had cops. They make up whatever they feel like, just to haul people in and abuse them for awhile. Whether it sticks is less important than just being able to deliver immediate vengeance under color of law.

We need to rewrite the laws so this kind of nebulous bullshit charge, so essential to enabling police brutality, is struck from the codes.

If you really intend to celebrate the first white or European person to discover the New World, you still need to yeet Columbus. Because the first white person to see it was Bjarni Herjólfsson, and the first to actually set foot on it was, of course, Leif Eriksson.

Chicago priest Fr. Larry Dowling describes procession to ICE facility: “No one had the courage to speak directly to us. No one from Homeland Security could stand in the presence of the Monstrance holding the Blessed Sacrament. No wonder. Evil is repelled, recoils in the presence of Christ.”

Good thread, but this, in the interview, stood out painfully:
Interview with Episcopal minister Re. Brokenleg:
“ S: Yeah—I think our Church has too often thought of race as basically a Black and white thing. I think the other thing is American Indians make up such a small portion of the entire population as a whole that often our voice gets silenced. Here’s a concrete example: the police officer who murdered George Floyd also murdered an Indigenous person years before and it didn't get the same hearing I think that George Floyd is getting. It’s obviously not a competition of who's oppressed more or anything, but had they taken that death seriously at the time and had then-Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar actually prosecuted the officer, George Floyd might not have ever been killed in the first place.”

Back in 1980 we had a choice: to put a leash on the growing power of the rich and squelch the upward suck of money from poor to wealthy, or to let the new Gilded Age begin. This is what that choice wrought, and fascism is what it’s created. The possibility of peaceful change has almost vanished now.

The 400 richest Americans are now worth a record $6.6 trillion.

The entire bottom 50% of America is worth just $4.2 trillion.

Read that back.

When 400 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

The whole point of Columbus Day was never about Italian heritage. It was to celebrate when the first white men officially charted a new world untroubled by their political & religious bullshit at home. It was literally to say, “Hurrah! People like us finally arrived to invent NEW European bullshit.”

This is exactly the kind of group Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò wrote about in 2020’s Identity Politics and Elite Capture: “Elites get outsize control over the ideas in circulation about identities by, more or less, the same methods and for the same reasons that they get control over everything else.”

They tell us more about themselves on book tours and in speaking gigs than they ever did at their confirmation hearings, but somehow this public logorrhea is ok and refusing to cooperate at the hearing was the soul of discretion.

if we are going to have a supreme court that is as powerful as it is, i basically think justices should be forbidden from public comment on their work as well as any supplemental source of income while they are on the bench. (they should also ride circuit again but that's a bit separate.)
andycraig.bsky.social
The substance of what she's saying is bad and unconvincing, but more fundamentally, I really don't think Supreme Court justices should be going on book tours where they publicly comment on their work and respond to criticism of it. Either put it in a written opinion or hold your peace.

Hitler‘s time was a blip in 2000 years. But he signed a concordat with Pius XII’s Church, which later agreed to remain neutral. As news emerged of Hitler’s butchery of Jews, the church advised those reports were unreliable because Jews “easily exaggerate.”

Conservative Christianity has been 97% responsible for nearly every war, tyranny, and most of the atrocities committed in Europe & Britain from earliest history. It’s frightening to see a movement building over there that would bring it all back.

In an environment where so few “champions” seem to appear, it’s natural for people to cling to the few they’ve found. Even mild dissent from moral wafflers seems better than none. Yet we do need leaders with courage & virtue. Unfortunately history teaches that’s a very rare combination.

To be honest, I wouldn’t challenge my own deportation to Costa Rica either. I know people who pay hard-earned money just to be there for a week. And I hear there are dinosaurs.
juliedicaro.bsky.social
So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/u...
For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.
