Sort of ordinary, right? It says "Common Cotton Stainer Bug," ordinary until I slow down enough to follow the red, to take in the marvelous red eyes, the white necklace, what looks like a red heart beating at the nape, the upper legs—red, and the gorgeous, pearlescent intricacies of the wings.

I see. Wolves reduce car crashes by keeping deer off the roads; vultures suppress rabies by clearing livestock carcasses; frogs protect us from-malaria by eating mosquitos. A study in Central America shows malaria up five-fold because frogs are in decline. 👀

I argued last night with poet friends, spirited irreverent women all. They were on about possums, how creepy, how yucky—their teeth when they freeze & their tails. But look at those ears. Those little pink fingers. Their fur. Even that they freeze instead of attack as a defense. I rest my case.
