While we're best known for our work with elephants, our Orphans' Project extends to all manner of species. This is especially true at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in Tsavo, where an unlikely family has taken shape.

Little Zigi turns eight months old this month. Surrounded by adoring nannies and watched over by Keepers, he's doing wonderfully – as is his mother, Zongoloni, who has embraced motherhood after her own traumatic start as a poaching orphan.

Meet Solio – proof that saving one rhino can impact the species as a whole. Orphaned by poaching, we raised her in our care, until she was ready to reintegrate into Nairobi National Park. She has since had two calves – both contributing to Kenya's rhino recovery. www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.o...

Through boreholes, water bowsers, and dams, we provide elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and countless other creatures access to drinking water. Without this, animals would be forced onto community land – creating human-wildlife conflict. Your support ensures wildlife can stay within safe borders.

Led by matriarch Murera, Umani Springs has become a haven for ex-orphan mothers raising their wild-born calves. The youngest members – Lenny, Mwana, Zigi, and Sulwe – tumble and play under watchful eyes, growing up knowing safety and family bonds: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/o...

The moment Kaikai grew strong enough to walk great distances, our little sprite discovered her non-negotiable: daily mud baths. Weather forecasts mean nothing. Keeper schedules are merely suggestions. When Kaikai decides it's mud time, it's mud time! swt.bio/kaikai

Our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units exist to alleviate animal suffering. This successful operation to save a snared elephant's trunk earlier this year is a powerful reminder of the difference they make. To date, more than 3,800 elephants have been offered life-saving treatment by our Veterinary Units.

Orphaned at a week old, Kaikai has known little family other than her trio of Keepers, Mishak, Joseph, and Simon. They're not just caregivers; they're parents, her safe place, and the reason she came through the darkest chapter of her young life. You can be a part of her family too: swt.bio/kaikai

#Throwback to milk inspector Korbessa urging Keeper Joseph along – those bottles won't make themselves! What began as a one-off extra serving of milk turned into a daily expectation. The boys in the herd don’t even bother asking – they know that bonus bottle belongs to her: swt.bio/korbessa

When Apollo outgrew our Kaluku Nursery and moved up to Rhino Base, it marked a pivotal step on his path back to the wild. This secure sanctuary gives him the space to build independence while still benefiting from expert care and close monitoring. www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.o...

Meet Kaikai, who has captured every heart at Kaluku. Daphne Sheldrick once said when orphans play, you know they've turned a corner. For Kaikai, who had a heart-breaking start to life, seeing her turn a wave “hello” into a game shows her recovery is well underway. Adopt her: www.swt.bio/kaikai

We now celebrate 83 wild-born calves who exist because we rescued their mothers years ago. Nasalot (seen here with baby Nala and Nusu), was one such elephant orphaned by tragedy, now raising her family in the wild. Caring for orphaned rhinos is a round-the-clock commitment. Did you spot the bunk bed? That's where Chamboi's Keeper slept during those early months after his rescue.

A year on, his daily milk needs are still being met thanks to our donors.

Naipoki’s new baby is a special milestone for us: He is the 80th known calf born to an orphan we rescued, raised, and reintegrated back into the wild. This new generation is helping to secure a future for Kenya's elephants - one baby at a time. www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.o...

The formula we use to feed orphaned rhinos is tailored specifically to their nutritional needs – and different from what we give orphan elephants. We've successfully hand-raised 20 rhinos to date – this critically endangered youngster is Chamboi (filmed in 2024). Meet him: swt.bio/chamboi

There's a tradition that never gets old: our ex-orphans returning home after giving birth, just to share the joy with the Keepers who raised them. This time of year is full of these reunions - mothers bringing their wild-born babies back to say hello. That's what your support creates. 🐘💚

Each of these babies are only alive today because we stepped into rescue and raise their mothers after they were orphaned. Today, these rescued elephants are living wild and raising confident, playful babies.

Matriarchs and bulls carry ancient migration routes in their memory – critical knowledge passed down through generations. Our Water for Wildlife Project supports these journeys, providing lifelines during the harshest months.

Thank you to our donors for helping us support our wild neighbours.

For the better part of a century, we have provided a family and a wild future to every orphan who comes into our care – a lifetime commitment that extends long after they reclaim their place in the wild. If our Holiday film inspired you, you can support by adopting one of them ❤️ t.co/CooVpdJj7e
