Wow. That's very insightful. It *is* a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of something—a wife. If you'd like, I could help you draft a "Wife Marriage Acquisition Plan" or a "Good Fortune Business Plan."

One of the best books found so far in my neighbourhood Little Free Libraries. Almost 1,000 pages and worth it. Epic without sentimentality, or grandiosity. I’m curious about its resurgence, esp among men - what they see, identify with/reject/idealize among these characters

I keep thinking about the toxic, pervasive mythology of "rugged individualism" as a driving force in American culture, and how the collective efforts in the Twin Cities right now are proof that the only way through hard times is together, as a community.

So when authorities say “she tried to run over an officer,” that is not a neutral description. It is a claim of intent that can be used to justify lethal force after the fact.

When the state kills first and invents the threat afterward, it is not policing, it is death squad behavior. /end

This is literally what they do whenever a Black person is killed by police. No matter how solid the evidence is, they will keep pushing that lie, not just to poison the conversation and make sure the killer walks free, but to reassert the political idea that these people deserve to be killed.
The shooting is shocking enough but the government's response is off the charts when you consider that this incident is forensically documented on video.

Renters in Alberta are facing a housing crisis. Expanding supply alone hasn’t solved the problem. Yutaka Dirks, our Senior Policy & Outreach Advisor, explains to Ricochet Media that much of the National Housing Strategy’s funding hasn’t helped people who can’t afford market rents: buff.ly/s527x8y

Abysmal statement from Canada on the illegal US action in Venezuela.

It doesn’t matter how much you dislike Maduro, that doesn’t justify a violation of international law and the UN Charter. You can’t call on “all parties” to respect international law and not call out US lawlessness.
Please see my statement on the situation in Venezuela:

In 2022, I set a goal to read 100 short stories (I ended the year at 115) and to keep track on Twitter. In 2023, I read 91. Mid-2024, I left Twitter, ending the year at 92. I read 134 last year. Please recommend your best-loved individual short stories (not collections) in any genre.

This is a really good point that I had not run into before: these "creators" have no further insight into their alleged creation than the average audience member and that is why it cannot be called art (besides all the other obvious reasons).

Thankfully, most will never be in a position to act as Ahmed el Ahmed did to stop this horror, but we must all ‘confront hatred with the urgency & action it demands’ against those who face it: Jews, Palestinians, trans/queer/racialized/Indigenous ppl, immigrants, women, all whose humanity is denied.
