“There’s a cost to doing nothing.”

Great points about cities being afraid to move things forward.
#yyj Council is actually moving things forward. It can be scary, but we are progressing. More to do.
So you have to DO.

#yyj, this act of human generosity shouldn’t have been needed.

What’s needed is to provide dignity and safety to those in need.

@victoria.ca Council and the #crd can partner with @bchousing.bsky.social to install hygiene stations here while supportive housing is developed.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Watched and shared. Niigaan nails it “This is the end of a story that starts well before..” and “when govt tries something new, they take heat” so they don’t opt to do hard work. Simple solutions like ‘more police’ don’t do anything to reduce the # of folks suffering in the first place.

It’s pretty clear we need to keep on track remove barriers to affordable housing in #yyj

@victoria.ca Council, ignore the NIMBY nonsense, and keep pushing. Clear any barriers to getting these built, including delays at the Planning level.

The horrific anti-Semitic killings at Bondi Beach are unspeakable and indefensible.

And, never forget that the most pressing threat to Jews around the world are white supremacists.

Utterly beyond shameful. A horrific land grab aimed only to weaken prospects of a #palestine state or peace in the region. More will starve as the farms are cut off.
Shame on #Israel for authorizing it. Worse on those willing to move to settle on the land.

@rachelgilmore.bsky.social you said it!
Rachel Gilmore on the anti-DEI movement: "I think that to attack these notions is a dog whistle to the worst elements of society that are seeing a slide towards a more fascistic world. And every politician who engages in that should be ashamed of themselves."

🧵I stand unwavering against residential school denialism. This rhetoric is harmful, devastating, and retraumatizing for survivors and intergenerational survivors.

The truth is not up for debate; it is clearly documented in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s findings.

In the Netherlands, where the Dutch invest in safe cycling, the over-65s cycle around a quarter of their journeys, while the over-80s cycle around 10% of theirs.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and cycle lanes don't 'restrict freedom', they expand it.

Good example of the impacts of 1-2 generations of folks addicted to low taxes, fed by low interest rates, and the commoditization of property (rather than homes to live in).
So much good happening now— keep the foot on the pedal!
A short thread worth reading on affordable housing and supportive housing. Governments are trying to fill the gaps created by cuts to social housing and social safety nets starting in the '80s and '90s, and decades of neglect since. There is much more to do.

I love the constructive and realistic acknowledgement that despite imperfection we are making huge strides to catch up on “a 50 year lag”.
It can’t be done over night but we’re seeing positive changes, and need to keep up the work.

The most visible part of this effort is enforcement. However the other side is support. @pacificahousing.bsky.social is one organization doing this work. We’ve done an expanded outreach pilot that has gone out early mornings & evenings since the summer focused on the business corridors 🧵

Councils cannot and do not direct police enforcement activities. This Council and many before it has given the Vic Pd escalating budget increases year over year, proving that relying solely on enforcement is a lose lose lose. Frmer Chief Del Manak did not help despite the $$$ he demanded.

This is not a #yyj only issue, nor caused by #yyjpoli councils or government. If other #crd munis don’t step up, the problems will grow. More shelters, transitional housing, compassionate support, rental support, and safe public space are needed, here & everywhere.

Quite simply, #ppollievre is not a serious person. He’d rather munch apples, make up slogans, insults and kindergarten-level rhymes, than look after Canada. He doesn’t have a vision or a plan for protecting our country’s interests.
