Most of all, as one of the impact story interviewees said, what you read represents hope… for me it’s hope of what can be at a grand scale. #housing #homelessness #bcpoli #canpoli #nanaimo #yyj
The stats also show steady growth that nevertheless does not meet demand. And all on a programming and admin budget that are at concerning levels that frankly represent risk.
The statistics show growing service delivery with strong results… a result of investments from all levels of government. Here are our shared wins and their business case for continued investment in such services. This includes non profits that deliver complimentary services.
The report demonstrates a microcosm of what solving the #housing crisis takes - affordable #housing across the continuum, prevention, supports, meeting people where they are at, community engagement.
I am pleased to share @pacificahousing.bsky.social latest impact report. We’ll be highlighting different sections of the report over the following weeks. I highly recommend reading the whole report. The impact stories are powerful. 🧵

Projected replacement units already don’t meet need. There are 500 ish people accessing shelter + the 60-ish that don’t. This is for supportive #housing. What most #homeless people need doesn’t exist. #yyj #bcpoli
This is v unfortunate. I understand & respect why but this just means that all those folks on the street & shelters won’t access #housing into after all the relocations happen. Just recently finished relocating people from sites to be redeveloped.
When an issue is not just local it opens the door to collaborative problem solving or even temperature checking on progress.
Blaming elected leaders for causing issues like extortion (Province) or street disorder (muni) misses the mark in these cases. The measure of effectiveness is if they are adapting and responding appropriately or hanging on to tactics that are in the known and comfort zone.
Issues like #homelessness, growing street disorder, open and destructive substance use, and even kidnappings and extortion are happening in countries where this phenomenon was rare. The volume is different and the response may be different but the issues are the same.
On solving our biggest and emerging issues .. It can be difficult to determine at first glance what are local , provincial, national or global ones. Sometimes we don’t care bc we just want our problem solved. But it’s an important distinction. The why determines the appropriate response.
Nanaimo’s Design Advisory Panel unanimously approved our proposed affordable #housing project with some practical recommendations. Very excited to be moving closer to obtaining a development permit. Much needed in #Nanaimo. Then we’ll just need the capital to build. 🤞. #bcpoli
“It might seem there is an oversupply happening, but it’s not going to last. A surge of new unit completions coming onto the market only lasts for a few years before they are absorbed…if we don’t have…constant addition of units, we are again going to face another housing crisis.”
Yesterday evening’s sunset after a relatively rainy day. Looks like the runners will will get a nice day today for the Royal Victoria Marathon. #yyj #victoriabc #sunset

Adding the combination of student housing, private rental & ownership, supportive housing, new hotels does more than restrictions ever could. It all releaves pressure, supports the economy. These combined additions have required will from different sectors and levels of government. It can be done.
Great news for #housing in Greater Victoria #yyj. The gains in this region have been really positive over the last few years. It takes time to see results & we are just starting to see them - at least for independent living. I truly hope this can continue and replicate across the Province. #bcpoli

So yes, I agree with this opinion piece in the @timescolonist.bsky.social and I agree with Julian. They are talking about 2 sides of the same coin. We need the whole spectrum of services and logical consequence for things to improve.
Because there is no expectation the rest of the system (health, justice) will fulfill their roles. And non-profits, neighbourhoods, municipalities are left absorbing the consequences of both the lack of services and lack of consequences. Nobody suffers more than the most vulnerable folks.
Because the main goal is to prevent the individual exhibiting anti-social behaviour from experiencing any consequences. This doesn’t do them any favours either. Once they are in #housing, it’s like the goal is to keep them there no matter what…
