The discarded head part of a caterpillar after molting or pupating is called the head capsule or face cap. It's the hard, outer part of the head that a caterpillar sheds when it molts to grow larger. The face cap looks like a small, sometimes dark mask or helmet that is shed with the rest of the skin and is typically eaten by the caterpillar for nutrients. It is the "face" from the previous growth stage, and a new face emerges underneath before it is discarded. Caterpillars go through this process multiple times as they grow. This particular face cap was discarded during pupation.

A group of wiggly River Otters climbed out of the canal at Ridgefield NWR earlier in the week, covered in duckweed, and rolled about in the grass on shore for a few minutes before going back into the water to swim on their way.

This guy has cleaned up pretty well. There were four or five otters, roiling the water and rolling about on shore. Always a treat to see them. 🙂 The otter in the background shows the duckweed that they were contending with, the canal was pretty well covered in the stuff.
