I should quit my job as a professor and do something with more market demand by starting a podcast about the virtues drinking tiger liver-bile, or selling meme coins, or even becoming parlay-wagering middle man in gambling ring.

This is actually a good example of why the customer model is wrong.

I wouldn't have chosen poetry writing, but UNC made me take a class. And it absolutely made me become a much better writer, with an eye to concision and an ear now trained to the rhythm of words. I'm a better historian as a result.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

Students, staff, faculty turning to ChatGPT? That means they are being asked to do things they don't have the time, resources, support, etc to do.

College teachers and staff everywhere, take note
ICE raided Augsburg University in Minnesota and allegedly pointed guns at students.

They didn’t have a warrant to be on private property, and students are shaken and left feeling unsafe.

At least one was detained.

They’re not going after criminals.

They’re grabbing anyone they can.

Yes, indeed. "Education at every level is also a crucial arena for cultural support. Cutting and closing programs in K–12 schools and higher education robs young people of the chance to exult in the right to culture."

Weird situation. AI adoption in the work world is stagnating, while higher-ed institutions are rushing to embrace it so that students will be prepared for…the work world?
“we estimate employment-weighted share of Americans using AI at work has fallen by a percentage point & now sits at 11%. Adoption has fallen sharply at the largest businesses, those employing +250 people. 3 yrs into the genAI wave, demand looks surprisingly flimsy” www.economist.com/finance-and-...
Investors expect AI use to soar. That’s not happening

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

Today in my grad class, I did a reverse storyboard on the blackboard (with colored chalk!) of SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE by Claire Keegan and discussed how one could expand it into a novel--not that one should, b/c its perfect. So basically, we collaborated on STLT fan fiction, and it was 💥

It sucks that meeting a new class now involves not just going over the syllabus, setting expectations, and trying to establish a rapport, but also trying to deduce whether any of your new students are vigilante right wing operatives out to seek viral controversy at the expense of your job
If you are a chair of a department or supervise grad students, it might be important to collaborate with your colleagues on ways to strategize when a "problem essay" comes down the pike. It's one small way of protecting each other.

TX Tech has a flow chat for guidance on what can be taught in the university system. Two things:
1. Very little content seems to be permitted. This is partisan control of the curriculum.
2. I would not enjoy teaching under these conditions, but I really would not want to be a Chair or Dean.

I don’t know how much y’all have been following the Indiana gerrymandering battle, but it has everything.

Republicans standing up for election integrity (?!?). Trump threats. Swatting. The Gov calling a 9-0 election map “fair”, and a senator who was affected by a Trump slur.

Off we go (1/7)

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.
