what really bugs me about the "trans people got ahead of public opinion" line is that it ignores *why* public opinion changed. it didn't just come out of nowhere, there was a deliberate push to make trans rights a wedge issue.
Just started doing new data analysis and I know I keep saying this, but: I really, really don't think people appreciate how much this moral panic was a deliberate and extremely expensive invention.

I ran a campaign in this seat years ago. This has always been the bluest corner of white voters in St Paul, but these are Soviet level results. This seat averages ~20% for Republicans. This result is just slightly worse than the ~+14 D swing in special elections this last year.

This is one of the things that I find is most shocking to people outside Minnesota who don’t realize it yet—the scale at which everyone who isn’t white has been forced into a spectrum of hiding.
