SCOOP — A former staffer for Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ), Natalie Green, 26, was charged today for falsely reporting she was attacked by 3 men who wrote "TRUMP WHORE" on her stomach bc of her job. It was staged by her + a friend.

Van Drew isn't named in the complaint but I've confirmed w/ his office.

This is the hardest I have seen any member of Congress work to try and address transphobia in Congress, and her ability to get nearly all Democratic lawmakers to sign onto this letter is something any first would applaud

I think the issue is people are reacting within the context of an attention economy in which *any kind* of attention is its own reward — and attention from the NYT is seen as legitimized/legitimizing — before they even begin a deep read of editorial choices

This 🧵 gets to what I often talk about as the tendency to “read defensively”—in this case, if you are very critical of Nuzzi, then you’re apt to interpret something written about her as flattering, and take offense at it. But often that’s you reading into it something that isn’t intended.
And is the framing firmly positive or is it the black and white “Hitchcock blond” photo spread? Does she come off as talented & sympathetic or unethical, (briefly) brought down by her own reckless ambition and lack of boundaries? Idk. I think I have different ideas about what’s flattering.
