Almost absolutely reliable. In Ireland since 2017. Parent to LGBTQ+. Writer of history, studier of literature, creator of cosy magical realism. Just a whole mess.

I want to share with you the single funniest thing I have ever read in my life. I first read this around 1993 in a copy of the Oxford Book of Humorous Prose that I picked up in a bookshop in Pittsburgh, PA.

Oh, your movie doesn’t have Miss Piggy crashing through a stained glass window on a motorcycle to tackle Charles Grodin then hop up and Emma Peel* the shit out of his accomplices while dressed like (Even More) Glam Evel Knievel? Sucks to suck.

The Age of Wool needs to begin.

(If you prepare the fiber right it's soft, fully washable, extremely flexible weaving-wise, and it literally grows on livestock we already raise for dairy and meat. Stays warm when wet, doesn't trap odors. How is wool NOT a smart fabric??)
Ok Black Friday surfing has demonstrated the following to me:
- wool trousers simply no longer exist
- even wool-blend trousers barely exist (and so few washable?? whyever not??)
- the tyranny of Smart Fabrics (wtf) must end, except where indicated. It's wearing plastic. Would you wear a ziplock??

Useful ideas for teaching students how to read history.
“Scholarly effort is in decline everywhere as never before. Indeed, cleverness is shunned at home and abroad. What does reading offer to pupils except tears?”

Which is amazing. 🧵
Here's the Bletchley Park connection, in full:
I don't actually *know* that my late great-uncle worked at Bletchley. But the available evidence suggests he did. Here's what I know.

I inherited a few things when he died - not in his will, but just collected from his attic. One of these is significant, and linked.

Reading letters from the Princess Liselotte of Palantine, the German sister-in-law of Louis XIV, and it's wild because she had this super informal writing style that almost sounds like modern texts

Like at one point she goes "wish to god my son didn't love holding chunks of bread like a peasant"

Just found out an application was denied; they then could not provide further information on how that decision was made, despite submitted reports. Babes, I was forged in the fires of the American healthcare system, leaping forth with arguments in one hand and documentation in the other. Strap in.

✨ A few years back I stood outside Wells Cathedral for a full day and photographed the impact of the light on the front facade. I was amazed at the outcome - at how a single entity could morph and change under the changing light. 🌅 #thread

All my Irish friends are spontaneously sending "Happy Thanksgiving!" messages and I'm having to be honest with them: we don't observe it. We tried the first year here, but the oven was small and I was strung out. The plates were still half full when one of the kids said, "Let's get sushi next year."
