SPOILERS On a rainy night a bus suffers a mechanical error and goes careening off a bridge into the river below. The driver and the passengers on that bus wake from unconsciousness to a city of perpetual night. Only a very few of the people on that bus realize where they have been taken. I rewatched Light Shop recently. I was in the mood for something haunting and thought provoking but nothing on the multitude of streaming services that I’m subscribed to caught my attention. Then I saw the thumbnail for…

Any pundit or business pushing "A.i." on people is making a choice NOT to push for better wages and social services for everyone.
No, authors aren't burnt out because "writing without AI is slow"

We're burnt out because we're paid dirt so we need day jobs to survive

This is absolutely what struck me as a parent of young kids. There's so much love invested into each of these little things, and here it's just ripped away.
Liam’s mom dressed him in all those layers to keep her little boy warm and safe in this frigid weather, packed his book-bag w/ everything he’d need for a good day at school, and then our govt stole him out of their driveway. Used her little boy as bait. These people are monsters.

A five year old with a Spider-Man backpack.

Peter Parker would be absolutely beside himself.
This is who federal agents are ripping out of their communities and shipping across the country. This is the danger we're being protected from.

Nasra Ahmed, a 23-year-old US citizen, was arrested and detained by ICE. She was held for TWO DAYS.

ICE agents handcuffed her, called her a racial slur, and she was knocked to the ground so hard she got a concussion.

This cannot continue happening. ICE needs to leave.

I needed to be told the story to fully appreciate it. I wasn’t a fan of Cassandra Khaw’s Nothing But Blackened Teeth when I first read it. The audiobook changed my mind. Its narrator, Suehyla El Attar gave Cassandra’s words a rhythm and an “oomph” that the voice in my head could not. Listening. I developed an appreciation for the poetry in Cassandra’s writing. Her descriptions do more than detail an action or object. They inform how that action or object’s meaning (as well as some melodramatic flair). For example, this is how Cassandra describes the act of Phillip, her rich American character, taking off his shoes and putting on a pair of slippers before entering the house:

The Tsundokuist

I learned a new word: Tsundoku. It’s a portmanteau (another new word I learned) of the Japanese words tsunde-oku (to let things pile up) and dukosho (to read). Tsundoku is the act of buying books and letting them just pile up without reading them. According to Tanner Garrity, it’s…

I learned a new word: Tsundoku. It’s a portmanteau (another new word I learned) of the Japanese words tsunde-oku (to let things pile up) and dukosho (to read). Tsundoku is the act of buying books and letting them just pile up without reading them. According to Tanner Garrity, it’s supposed to be an expression of the individual’s healthy relationship with continued learning as well as an admission of not knowing it all. I am a tsundokuist (this word I made up). I buy books three-at-a-time only to forsake two, reading just the one before buying three more.

Yep. Abolish “A.i.”
I’m sorry, but it is disgraceful to be an academic who uses this technology to conduct research. It should be prohibited in all of our scholarly institutions, including universities and journals.

This has gotten very little coverage in the US, but on Monday US military contractors or troops or some other paramilitary group placed signs on a beach in Mexico, claiming it as US territory. (The contested location is close to the SpaceX base outside Brownsville)

I visited Galerie Templon in NYC yesterday and spent a moment immersed in Chiharu "Connected to the Universe." I took pictures of my favorite pieces. The single needle-like figure and the threads shooting out of it into intricate swirls and messy loss threads spoke volumes to me.

Thank you @jamesgunn.bsky.social for the more realistic portrayal of Krypto. Superman was a lot of fun but it was Krypto that made the movie for me. I honestly teared up a bit as it made me think of my own dog that passed earlier this year.

Has it really been 40 years? I have vague memories of getting up early on a Saturday in the summer before my freshman year at college with a stack of blank VHS tapes and my finger on the record button of the family VHS player. I think I was there almost the entire day.
