It's important to note that this means that only 8% of the top 100 GROSSING films are directed by women. It doesn't mean that 92% of all films are directed by men. It means the films by women are not making as much money. But the directors are there and making films.

We’re on the other side of multiple decades of efficiency gospel. the texture of today’s capitalism is such that something not easily optimizable like mentorship can be approximated (if it’s needed at all) in a far less time consuming way than sustained human interaction.
Why are we being told that all the good stuff from our earlier years - like having undergrad mentors - has suddenly become disposable and unnecessary? The subtext seems to be that the kind of human development we enjoyed - the kind of people we became via education - is & are no longer welcome.
