My challenge for 2026 is to stop pouring poison into my own well. My books are not pieces of shit, my ideas are not crap, I'm actually rather good at this thing I've invested 20+ years into, and pretending that I'm not does more harm than good.

I suspect this is true of a lot of you.

Thomas approached her, eyes boring into hers now. She let her eyelids flutter as one hand rested on her hip, his thumb hooking through a belt loop. "You planning on sex magicking at me?" he asked, his voice low and surprisingly soft, and Kimmy knew she had him. He affected the nonchalant air of a man who didn’t want to look too eager, but her suggestion had taken root and blossomed.

Forgot to do #WIPSNIPS today, but i did buy new skis after i found a mouse living in the toe of one of my old boots. The ski shop took one look at my old boards and said "we legally cannot service those." Damn, yall sure know how to make a girl feel old as hell.

The next day Niamh ached all over. Human bodies really weren’t meant to operate independently of their soul for long, it felt weird and bad in different ways for different people. Kimmy described it like feeling numb, or like her senses were operating on a delay. Niamh felt like she’d been beaten with a sack of oranges. Which was another excellent reminder as to why she shouldn’t just shuck off her meat willy nilly.

“I’m here to talk to Thomas Owens, is that you?” The figure stepped into view. Skinny, nervous, with a big head that made him look like a dandelion about to blow. He wore motorcycle leathers and there was a knife tucked into his boot, but he had the air of a true geek. He could be a fae lord, Thomas supposed, but fae glamors were subtle as a hammer once you knew what to look for. They wouldn’t be a geek with cystic acne scars. Still the power was there. Even the mundane bar regulars could feel it. They leaned semi-consciously away from him, huddling over their drinks as if waiting for a storm to pass.

His attention turned towards the city as Abraham’s retinue entered Patr. His sense of wrongness grew as they passed through the streets. The city was a corpse, and its death recent. The method of its passing wasn’t apparent. An entire populace didn’t up and vanish for no reason. Patr was bigger than South Point, maybe a little smaller than Brestil, which was a respectable size as far as Talmanic cities went. Displacing that many people was a staggering undertaking, but even more concerning—there would always be stragglers who refused to leave. If anyone like that existed here they were well hidden. At the end of the day, the Black Lives Matter era was about whether people should be killed in the street, and lots of people decided yeah and put those little blue flags on their cars. It spread to everyone because it stopped for no one.

I’m sure it can be changed.” “I’m not sure of anything when your book is concerned.” John pushed his hands through his hair and sat back, looking more stressed than Niamh had ever seen him. “So. Death. Destruction. All of that. Loss and Chaos really will come back.” “That’s a good thing, isn’t it? We work better in threes.” “No,” John said, and Niamh sighed, aggravated to her bones. John waved a hand at her. “Come now, even you can see that she’d make things worse,” he said. “I’m reasonably certain I could convince even Technology of that.” “Technology loved Wealth. Possibly more than he loved me.” It didn’t even hurt to say anymore, not much, anyway. Nobody got out of childhood unscathed, not even dragons.

Dragons are kinda like sharks in that they chew each other the fuck up during sex, so for Thomas and Niamh biting is not just desireable its expected.

Setting broadly determines themes. A book set on a spaceship might play with ideas of personal space, in a forest on themes of bounty/scarcity

Setting directly defines resources characters have (Magic? Lasers? Cell phones?) As well as threats (cops? The inquisition? RED LASERS?!)
