I am also an exploratory writer, but the one thing I always have to have before I start is an idea of an ending, or maybe a few scenes I know I want to write towards. This way I am always writing towards an end goal even if I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to get there yet.

The fact that I have to work a full time job to pay the bills and ensure I have healthcare access while I desperately stuff my writing time in whenever I can is a perennial annoyance
