This week has been a good reminder of this April 1934 headline. Communists and Jews in Belfast disrupt a fascist rally in Library Street. Belfast will always be an antifascist city. We keep showing up for each other to defeat fascism even if the police & state backs it. [1/n]

If phones = rest at work, good. The real lack of productivity (if that even exists - I don't believe it is real) comes from forcing people to work past 60 years of age. That's why the NHS needs more money too, to keep people who should be enjoying their retirement working when their body wants rest.
Not saying people stare at their phones like zombies, but there was a pretty life-changing product launch in 2007

13k comments on one tweet is a massive payout. All of the tweets follow a certain formula, so the content is likely automated using AI technology (e.g., AI generated images and text). Basically running it as a money printing machine. But for those in the US, it translates to low simmering rage.

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

This is today's news from Belfast. The funding of white supremacist terror by @cooperationirl.bsky.social and
@seupb.bsky.social - A million pounds of public money to armed active groups that are using criminality and violence underpinned by racist, sectarian, fascist ideology to exert control.
Three different articles on the BelTel alone today, showcasing appropriate anger at PEACEPlus (the EU programme) and Co-operation Ireland for financing proscribed organisations, specifically the South East Antrim UDA, that was behind the Ballymena race riots in June.
Splashing a million pound of our money on a gang of thugs is beyond sick
Public services in Northern Ireland are collapsing, and we’re constantly told there’s not enough money to fix them.

As Maya Goodfellow shows in "Hostile Environment", this is a recurring theme in the political discourse on immigration. Racism is framed as a regrettable but natural response to a number of migrants arbitrarily deemed to be excessive, rather than a socially constructed and contestible subjectivity.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood made more explicit her argument that when ethnic minorities face racism, "we have no choice but to ask: what is the cause of our division"

Her answer is the level of net migration, 2019-23 causes racism. (She on Monday said it was caused by the scale of asylum)
