Haven't received as many contributions as usual for this year's lists--could be many things, but one aspect is surely that our ability to get this in front of people is much diminished. If you know folks whose stuff should be on here, please suggest it! contingentmagazine.org/yearly-pub-l...

🧵 on how classic studies of US voting behavior phoned it in w/r/t what was happening with women
Today is a good day to remind you that none of the classic vote studies thought very highly of women's political competence.

it's OK to point out that someone sucks even if a lot of people like them for whatever misguided reason
All the supposedly progressive people saying 'Nigel Farage's racism doesn't matter. His fans love it'.

It matters whether the leader of the party leading all the opinion polls is an outright racist. It matters if he called black people 'wogs' and said 'gas them' to Jews. Not everything is a game

this is not to say that all 'canonical' cognitive dissonance findings replicate perfectly when the best methods are used; for example, the core cognitive-consistency effect persists but it does not increase when ppl have more freedom in choosing counter-attitudinal behavior, i.e.,

the parts of our evolved cognitive architecture -- and some individuals' personalities in particular -- that contribute to classical forms of magical thinking do not simply evaporate when religious identity does, even if norms associated with some religious identities do facilitate magical thinking
a good bit of the pathology attributed to 'religion' in the abstract is basically pathology associated with the psychology of social identity processes and the evolved psychology of coalitions; religion is a social identity & a basis for coalitions but it is hardly the only one
The decline of religion as a source of meaning in people's lives remains underrated as a factor shaping society. The need doesn't go away - they just seek it out elsewhere in (often false) health/wellness beliefs, (often highly polarized/conflictual) politics, etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/o...

It’s fair that voters who shifted hardest right in '24 -- e.g. low-propensity Hispanic voters -- probably turned out at lower rates in NJ/VA, so the “persuasion” angle is obscured.

But this Echelon Insights chart makes a key point: data shows Trump right now is *weaker* with low-propensity voters

Excellent, nuanced overview of the new critique of ‘When Prophecy Fails.’ Being trained as a social psychologist, I would also note that almost none of us would cite WPF as the canonical empirical evidence for or demonstration of the existence of cognitive dissonance effects. (1/2)
NEW: When Propecy Fails is one of the most famous social psychology books of all time, a look at a small group of UFO believers when the “spacemen” failed to land. I wrote about a new study from an independent researcher who says the book is not what it seems. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
It’s one of the most influential social psychology studies ever. Was it all a lie?
A classic book on UFO believers and their "cognitive dissonance" after aliens failed to land is called into question.

* You know how Van Halen had a contract rider demanding bowls of M&Ms with the brown ones removed?

They later claimed that was all a test to make sure venues were reading their contracts. Clever!

BUT WAIT, that claim itself is actually false. I fact-checked it.
