this is not to say that all 'canonical' cognitive dissonance findings replicate perfectly when the best methods are used; for example, the core cognitive-consistency effect persists but it does not increase when ppl have more freedom in choosing counter-attitudinal behavior, i.e.,

a good bit of the pathology attributed to 'religion' in the abstract is basically pathology associated with the psychology of social identity processes and the evolved psychology of coalitions; religion is a social identity & a basis for coalitions but it is hardly the only one

Excellent, nuanced overview of the new critique of ‘When Prophecy Fails.’ Being trained as a social psychologist, I would also note that almost none of us would cite WPF as the canonical empirical evidence for or demonstration of the existence of cognitive dissonance effects. (1/2)

UPDATE: Boasberg orders the parties to submit plans for the "inquiry regarding a potential contempt referral," by tomorrow, "including names of possible witnesses and dates for hearings." (ACLU's Lee Gelernt smartly suggested waiting on the mandate from the DC Circuit before issuing any orders.)
