Statement from AfghanEvac President Shawn VanDiver – November 26, 2025 On the shooting of two West Virginia National Guardsmen in DC We are deeply saddened by the tragic attack in Washington, DC, and our hearts go out to the West Virginia National Guardsmen and their families. No one should ever have to endure this kind of harm. We reject and condemn anyone who uses, or seeks to use, violence, and we stand with every American who is horrified and saddened by this crime. There is no excuse — no context, no grievance, no ideology — that justifies the actions of the shooter. AfghanEvac expects and fully supports the perpetrator facing full accountability and prosecution under the law. None of us want to be defined by the actions of another person, so we encourage the media, elected leaders, decision-makers, and other people of influence not to demonize the Afghan community for the deranged choice this person made. Afghan immigrants and wartime allies who resettle in the United States undergo some of the most extensive security vetting of any population entering the country. As with any serious crime, authorities will examine how this happened and whether any systems failed — and we support a fact-based review. But nothing we learn will change the simple truth that this individual alone is responsible for his actions. This individual’s isolated and violent act should not be used as an excuse to define or diminish an entire community. AfghanEvac rejects any attempt to leverage this tragedy as a political ploy to isolate or harm Afghans who have resettled in the United States. From the MN Society for Professional Journalists: St. Paul police shot three photojournalists (MPR, Reuters, Sahan Journal) with "less lethal" munitions during an ICE operation yesterday. One had to go to the hospital. They say they were specifically targeted by St. Paul police.
MNSPJ condemns St. Paul police attacks on journalists The Minnesota Society of Professional Journalists strongly condemns attacks on journalists by law enforcement on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2025, during a federal operation in St. Paul. At least three local photojournalists were injured by less-lethal munitions deployed by St. Paul police officers while covering the story. One was transported to the hospital in an ambulance. All three journalists were clearly identified as press with badges and/or vests, in addition to having cameras in hand, clearly at work. All three photojournalists and multiple other local journalists on scene were also injured by chemical irritants. Kerem Yücel, with MPR News, was hit by a less-lethal munition in the shoulder and was transported to a hospital by ambulance. He has since been released and is recovering. Tim Evans, a freelance photojournalist with Reuters, was struck in the stomach with a pepper ball round. Aaron Nesheim, a photojournalist with Sahan Journal, was struck in the head with a pepper ball round. Evans and Nesheim did not require hospitalization. The three journalists hit by munitions shared with MNSPJ that they believe they were targeted by law enforcement for doing their jobs. Photojournalists are on the frontlines of documenting history and it is imperative that they are kept safe and their First Amendment rights are protected. Attacking journalists sends a message to both journalists and everyday citizens that their First Amendment rights will not be respected. The First Amendment protects the rights of journalists to report on their communities and provide information that communities need — information that, on Tuesday, was not transparently available from any law enforcement agency. We demand answers from St. Paul city leadership about why the city’s police department attacked our colleagues and a commitment to seeing that this will never happen again.

Laura Loomer, the far-right political activist known for her virulently anti-Muslim views, was quick to speculate about the shooter’s background on X, where she has 1.8 million followers. “Communist, Muslim, Trans terrorist, Furry, or ANTIFA?” she asked. Loomer also posted a photo of a bearded man being carried into an ambulance, though The Washington Post could not immediately verify that the image came from Wednesday’s crime scene. “I’m just going to say. That’s a very Mohammedan looking beard,” she wrote. “I’ll wait for more details. But the beard with no mustache the night before a Western holiday is not lost on me.”

Don’t forget that *Trump’s own lawyer’s argument* to the Supreme Court in the immunity case was that the check on the President using his immunity to order criminal acts was that those under him would not follow illegal orders. Now it’s a crime for lawmakers to remind servicemembers of that?

Basic civics shouldn’t be controversial: Congress writes the rules for the armed forces, and members of Congress explaining those rules is not punishable conduct.

Constitutional limits exist for exactly this reason, and Congress needs to exercise the authority the Framers entrusted to it.

Art. I of the Constitution gives Congress the power to make rules and regulations for the armed forces — including codes of discipline and strictures against following illegal orders. You can’t punish members of Congress for articulating those rules. Also protected by Speech and Debate Clause.

(Bloomberg) -- US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff, fresh from the triumph of the Gaza peace deal, held a phone call last month with a senior Kremlin official to suggest they work together on a similar plan for Ukraine — and that Vladimir Putin should raise it with Donald Trump. In an Oct. 14 phone call that lasted a little over five minutes, Witkoff advised Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s top foreign policy aide, on how the Russian leader should broach the issue with Trump. His guidance included suggestions on setting up a Trump-Putin call before Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s White House visit later that week and using the Gaza agreement as a way in. “We put a 20-point Trump plan together that was 20 points for peace and I’m thinking maybe we do the same thing with you,” Witkoff told Ushakov, according to a recording of the conversation reviewed and transcribed by Bloomberg. A White House spokesperson, Anna Kelly, acknowledged receipt of a request for comment and didn’t immediately respond. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov didn’t immediately respond to comment.
